Profile

Pan Sui is a Wei general who appears in Chapter 92 of the Romance. When the commander (dudu) Xiahou Mao, following the plan of his Army Adviser Cheng Wu, sets ambushes on both flanks to lure out Zhao Yun, Pan Sui rides forward to meet Zhao Yun, but turns his horse and flees before they have fought even three bouts. Romance, Ch. 92 §14–16

Zhao Yun, pursuing him, goes deep into enemy ground and is surrounded by the ambushing troops of Dong Xi and Xue Ze, and only after Zhang Bao and Guan Xing come to his rescue does he inflict a great defeat on the Wei army. Romance, Ch. 92 §16–17 · 19–22

Of the 120 chapters of the Romance he appears in only one, Chapter 92, and no chapter has his name in its title. The Biography of Zhao Yun in Chen Shou's main text only records that when Zhuge Liang attacked Mount Qi, Zhao Yun went with Deng Zhi to resist Cao Zhen's main army and, his troops being weak and the enemy strong, suffered a setback at the Ji Valley; Pan Sui appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Romance, Ch. 92 §16Records, Shu 6 §41

In the Romance

In Chapter 92 of the Romance, after Zhao Yun has cut down Han De's four sons and run Han De himself through, the commander Xiahou Mao, who had meant to fight in person, hastily takes refuge in his own lines, falls back more than ten li and pitches camp. When Xiahou Mao confers with his generals through the night, the Army Adviser Cheng Wu, son of Cheng Yu, comes forward and says that if they set ambushes on both flanks, and the commander first falls back to lure Zhao Yun to where the ambush lies, then climbs a hill and directs the troops on all four sides to surround him layer upon layer, Zhao Yun can be captured. Romance, Ch. 92 §8 · 12–14

Following this advice, Xiahou Mao gives Dong Xi and Xue Ze 30,000 troops each to lie in ambush on the left and on the right, and the next day leads out his troops again. Deng Zhi warns that since the Wei army that fled in a great defeat the night before has come again, there must be some trick, but Zhao Yun, saying that a babe still smelling of milk is not worth talking about, gallops out. The Wei general Pan Sui comes out to meet him, but turns his horse and flees before they have fought even three bouts; when Zhao Yun gives chase, eight generals ride out together from the Wei lines to oppose him, then let Xiahou Mao flee first and run off one after another. Romance, Ch. 92 §15–16

As Zhao Yun presses on with the momentum deep into enemy ground, battle cries rise on all sides, and Dong Xi attacks from the left and Xue Ze from the right. Deng Zhi, with few troops, cannot rescue him; Zhao Yun, with barely a thousand men, cannot break through the encirclement because Xiahou Mao on the hilltop directs the three armies, pointing east when Zhao Yun goes east and west when he goes west, and though he fights from the chen hour (morning) until the you hour (evening), he cannot get away. When the moon rises, firelight and arrows pour in from all sides, and Zhao Yun sighs, 'I would not admit that I was old, and now I am to die in this place.' Romance, Ch. 92 §16–19

Just then Zhang Bao, having cut down Xue Ze, and Guan Xing, having cut down Dong Xi, break in one after the other and rescue Zhao Yun, and that night troops on three routes attack together and inflict a great defeat on the Wei army. Xiahou Mao flees to Nan'an Commandery with a hundred or so of his bravest generals and shuts the city gates tight. After this the Romance does not bring Pan Sui onstage again. Romance, Ch. 92 §19–23
