Profile
Wan Zheng is a lieutenant of Guo Huai of Wei, who appears in Chapter 95 of the Romance. When Zhuge Liang withdraws his troops, he pursues Zhao Yun, who is holding the rear of the Shu army on the Ji Valley road, but recognizing Zhao Yun standing firm at the mouth of the road, he does not dare advance. On Guo Huai's orders he again sends several hundred swift horsemen in pursuit, but in a great forest his troops collapse at Zhao Yun's shout, and when he forces himself to face him, he is struck in the helmet tassel by an arrow shot by Zhao Yun, tumbles into a stream, and escapes back with his life. Romance, Ch. 95 §53 · 55–57
Of the 120 chapters of the Romance he appears in only one, Chapter 95, and no chapter has his name in its title. He appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biography of Zhao Yun in Chen Shou's main text merely records that in the 6th year of Jianxing (228), Zhao Yun and Deng Zhi, whose troops were weak and the enemy strong, fared badly at Ji Valley, but gathered their men and held firm, so that it did not come to a great defeat. In the Romance
In Chapter 95 of the Romance, when Zhuge Liang sends orders to bring the army back, Zhao Yun, who has troops lying in ambush on the Ji Valley road, says that the Wei army will surely come in pursuit, has Deng Zhi hoist his banner and withdraw slowly, and himself lies in ambush behind them. Guo Huai's vanguard commander Su Yong charges into Ji Valley leading the 3,000 troops of the forward division, but is run through by Zhao Yun's spear and killed, and the rest of his troops break and scatter. As Zhao Yun advances along the winding way, another body of troops arrives from behind: it is Guo Huai's lieutenant Wan Zheng. Romance, Ch. 95 §52–55
Seeing the Wei troops coming in hot pursuit, Zhao Yun reins in his horse and, levelling his spear, stands firm at the mouth of the road, waiting to cross weapons with the approaching general. The Shu army has already gone more than 30 li. Wan Zheng recognizes Zhao Yun and does not dare advance, and only after waiting until dusk does Zhao Yun turn his horse and move off slowly. When Guo Huai's troops arrive, Wan Zheng says that Zhao Yun is as valiant as ever and that he therefore did not dare go near him, and when Guo Huai orders a swift pursuit, he sends several hundred swift horsemen after him. Romance, Ch. 95 §56
When they reach a great forest, a great shout rings out behind them—'Zhao Zilong is here!'—and more than a hundred Wei soldiers fall from their horses in fright, while the rest all flee over the ridge. Wan Zheng forces himself to come out and face him, but when a single arrow shot by Zhao Yun strikes his helmet tassel, he tumbles in fright into a stream. Pointing his spear at him, Zhao Yun says that he will spare his life and send him back, and that he should hurry and tell Guo Huai to come after him, and Wan Zheng escapes back with his life. Zhao Yun escorts the carts, baggage, men and horses to Hanzhong without losing anything on the way, and Cao Zhen and Guo Huai retake the three commanderies and claim it as their own merit. Romance, Ch. 95 §57–58
