Of the 120 chapters of the Romance he appears in only one, Chapter 95, and no chapter has his name in its title. The name Su Yong appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biography of Zhao Yun in Chen Shou's main text merely records that in the 6th year of Jianxing (228), Zhao Yun and Deng Zhi, whose troops were weak and the enemy strong, fared badly at Ji Valley, but gathered their men and held firm, so that it did not come to a great defeat. In the Romance

In Chapter 95 of the Romance, Kongming leaves Xicheng and withdraws to Hanzhong, and Cao Zhen, pursuing Kongming, loses his vanguard commander Chen Zao to an ambush by Jiang Wei and Ma Dai and flees. Zhao Yun, who has troops lying in ambush on the Ji Valley road, hears that Kongming has sent orders to bring the army back; saying that once the Wei army learns that their troops are withdrawing it will surely give chase, and that he himself will first lead a detachment to lie in ambush behind it, he tells Deng Zhi to hoist his banner and withdraw slowly. Romance, Ch. 95 §49 · 52–53

Meanwhile Guo Huai leads his troops back again to the Ji Valley road and summons his vanguard commander Su Yong, telling him that the Shu general Zhao Yun is valiant beyond match and that he must be careful and on guard, and that if the enemy is withdrawing, there must be some stratagem. Su Yong cheerfully says that if the Commander will back him up, he himself will capture Zhao Yun alive, and charges into Ji Valley leading the 3,000 troops of the forward division. Just as he is about to catch up with the Shu army, a banner with white characters on a red ground reading 'Zhao Yun' flashes out from behind a hillside. Romance, Ch. 95 §54

Su Yong hastily pulls back his troops and flees, but before he has gone a few li, shouts shake the air and a body of troops suddenly bursts out. The general at its head, levelling his spear and spurring his horse, roars, 'Do you know Zhao Zilong?', and Su Yong, greatly alarmed, cries, 'How can there be another Zhao Yun here?' Before he can make a move, Su Yong is run through by a single thrust of Zhao Yun's spear and falls from his horse dead, and the rest of his troops break and scatter. Romance, Ch. 95 §55

Next, Guo Huai's lieutenant Wan Zheng comes in pursuit, but recognizing Zhao Yun standing firm at the mouth of the road, he does not dare advance. When Guo Huai orders a swift pursuit, Wan Zheng sends several hundred swift horsemen after him, but forcing himself to come out and face Zhao Yun, he is struck in the helmet tassel by an arrow from Zhao Yun, tumbles in fright into a stream, and escapes back with his life. Zhao Yun escorts the carts, baggage, men and horses toward Hanzhong without losing anything, and Cao Zhen and Guo Huai retake the three commanderies and claim it as their own merit. Su Yong's name does not appear again in the Romance after this. Romance, Ch. 95 §55–58
