Profile

Chen Zao was a Wei general who appeared in Chapter 95 of the Romance. When Zhuge Liang withdrew his army after Ma Su lost Jieting, the Grand Commander Cao Zhen hurriedly led troops in pursuit, and Chen Zao was his vanguard. When the Shu troops of Jiang Wei and Ma Dai, who had been lying in ambush behind a hill, came pouring out and Cao Zhen in alarm pulled his troops back, Chen Zao had already been cut down by Ma Dai. Romance, Ch. 95 §36–39 · 52

He appears in only one of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 95, and no chapter has his name in its title. The only place his name appears is the single passage in which he is cut down by Ma Dai. He does not appear in Chen Shou's main text or in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Romance, Ch. 95 §52

In the Romance

In Chapter 94 of the Romance, Cao Zhen pursued the retreating Shu army along two routes and lost both of his vanguards: the vanguard Cao Zun was cut down by Wei Yan, and the deputy vanguard Zhu Zan was run through by Zhao Yun's spear. Unable to stop grieving, Cao Zhen asked the court for reinforcements, and in Chapter 95 the Wei ruler Cao Rui made Zhang He the vanguard and sent him out together with Sima Yi, and gave Xin Pi and Sun Li 50,000 troops to assist Cao Zhen. Romance, Ch. 94 §21–23Romance, Ch. 95 §1

Hearing that Jieting and Lieliu City had both been lost, Zhuge Liang lamented that this was his own fault and prepared to withdraw. He told Guan Xing and Zhang Bao merely to beat drums and raise war cries on the byways of Mount Wugong to alarm the Wei troops, and he had Ma Dai and Jiang Wei guard the rear, first lying in ambush in the mountain valleys and withdrawing their own troops only after all the other forces had gone. Romance, Ch. 95 §37–39

On hearing that Zhuge Liang was withdrawing, Cao Zhen hurriedly led his troops in pursuit. A cannon boomed once behind a hill, and Shu troops came swarming over the hills and fields, led by the generals Jiang Wei and Ma Dai. As Cao Zhen, greatly alarmed, hastily pulled back his troops, his vanguard Chen Zao had already been cut down by Ma Dai. Cao Zhen fled back with his troops like a scurrying rat, and the Shu troops all returned to Hanzhong through the night. Romance, Ch. 95 §52

Afterwards Cao Zhen and Guo Huai retook the three commanderies and claimed it as their own achievement. Romance, Ch. 95 §58
