Profile
Princess Qinghe was a daughter of the Grand Progenitor of Wei, Cao Cao, and was married to Xiahou Mao, son of Xiahou Dun. In Chen Shou's main text she appears only in a single sentence at the end of the record of Xiahou Dun in Records of Wei 9: 'Earlier the Grand Progenitor had given a daughter in marriage to Xiahou Mao; she was Princess Qinghe.' Her personal name, her mother, the time of her marriage and the years of her birth and death are not recorded. Records, Wei 9 §9
In the Romance her name appears only in Chapter 91, 1 of its 120 chapters, and no chapter has her name in its title. In introducing Xiahou Mao, who comes forward to stop Zhuge Liang's northern expedition, the Romance states that after Xiahou Yuan was beheaded by Huang Zhong, Cao Cao took pity on Xiahou Mao and gave him his daughter Princess Qinghe, making him an imperial son-in-law. There is no scene in which the princess herself appears. Romance, Ch. 91 §48–49
In the Records
Princess Qinghe has no biography of her own in the Records and appears once at the end of the biography of Xiahou Dun in Records of Wei 9. Chen Shou wrote that after Xiahou Dun died his son Xiahou Chong succeeded him, that the emperor, recalling Xiahou Dun's merits, divided off a thousand households of his fief and granted Xiahou Dun's seven sons and two grandsons the rank of Marquis Within the Passes, and that Xiahou Dun's younger brother Xiahou Lian and his son Xiahou Mao had already been separately enfeoffed as full marquises. He then added, 'Earlier the Grand Progenitor had given a daughter in marriage to Xiahou Mao; she was Princess Qinghe.' Records, Wei 9 §9
Her husband Xiahou Mao served as Palace Attendant and Master of Writing and as General Who Pacifies the West and General Who Guards the East, and was granted the Tally. Chen Shou's main text tells nothing about Princess Qinghe beyond this marriage, nor does it say when or for what reason the marriage took place. Records, Wei 9 §9–10
In his assessment at the end of Records of Wei 9, Chen Shou said that because the Xiahou and Cao clans had intermarried for generations, Xiahou Dun, Xiahou Yuan, Cao Ren, Cao Hong, Cao Xiu, Xiahou Shang, Cao Zhen and others were all, as close kin and old friends, honored and esteemed in their time. Records, Wei 9 §132
In the Romance
In Chapter 91 of the Romance, when a report reaches Luoyang that Zhuge Liang has led a great army of more than 300,000 out to Hanzhong, Cao Rui asks who will take command and drive back the Shu army. Then Xiahou Mao, son of Xiahou Yuan, steps forward, saying that he has not yet avenged his father's death at Hanzhong, and asks to be given the troops of Guanxi so that he may go and crush Shu. Romance, Ch. 91 §47–48
At this point the Romance introduces Xiahou Mao, saying that he was extremely hot-tempered and extremely stingy and that as a child he had been adopted as Xiahou Dun's son and become his heir. It records that later, when Xiahou Yuan was beheaded by Huang Zhong, Cao Cao took pity on him and gave him his daughter Princess Qinghe, making Xiahou Mao an imperial son-in-law, and that for this reason he was respected at court. Xiahou Mao held military authority but had never gone into battle, and since he has volunteered for the campaign, Cao Rui makes him Grand Commander. Romance, Ch. 91 §49
The Minister over the Masses Wang Lang objects, saying, 'Imperial Son-in-Law Xiahou has never experienced battle,' but Xiahou Mao rebukes him, asking whether Wang Lang is in league with Zhuge Liang and means to act as his inside man, and, travelling through the night to Chang'an, gathers more than 200,000 troops and horses from the various routes of Guanxi. In the Romance, Princess Qinghe's name appears only once, in this introductory passage of Chapter 91. Romance, Ch. 91 §50–51
Where the Romance differs
Reason and time of the marriage: In Chapter 91 of the Romance, after Xiahou Yuan is beheaded by Huang Zhong, Cao Cao takes pity on Xiahou Mao and gives him his daughter Princess Qinghe, making him an imperial son-in-law. The Records say only that 'earlier' the Grand Progenitor had given a daughter in marriage to Xiahou Mao, without giving the reason or the time. Romance, Ch. 91 §49Records, Wei 9 §9
Her husband's father: In Chapter 91 of the Romance, Xiahou Mao is a son of Xiahou Yuan who as a child was adopted as Xiahou Dun's son and became his heir. The Records describe Xiahou Mao as Xiahou Dun's son, and the one who succeeded Xiahou Dun was his son Xiahou Chong. Romance, Ch. 91 §48–49Records, Wei 9 §9
