Profile

Lu Xun (盧遜) is a Shu commander who appears in Chapter 116 of the Romance, guarding the Nanzheng Pass. Knowing early that the Wei army would come, he places troops in ambush to the left and right of the wooden bridge before the pass and sets up the ten-bolt repeating crossbows left by Marquis Wu, driving back Zhong Hui's vanguard Xu Yi, who has come to seize the pass. When Zhong Hui, who has come to look in person, has his horse's hooves sink on the bridge and abandons his horse to flee, Lu Xun pursues him and thrusts at him with his spear, but is struck by an arrow that Xun Kai of the Wei army shoots after turning round, and falls from his horse. Romance, Ch. 116 §15–17

He appears only in Chapter 116, 1 of the Romance's 120 chapters, and his name is in no chapter title. The Romance does not record what happened to him after he fell from his horse. The Biography of Zhong Hui in Chen Shou's main text only records that Zhong Hui had the Gate General Xu Yi go ahead to prepare the road, and that when a hole opened in a bridge and the horse's hooves sank into it, he beheaded Xu Yi; Lu Xun appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. In the Romance

In Chapter 116 of the Romance, when the Wei army sets out, spies report it to Jiang Wei at Tazhong, and Jiang Wei submits a memorial to the Later Sovereign asking that Zhang Yi, General of Chariots and Cavalry of the Left, be sent to guard Yang'an Pass and Liao Hua, General of Chariots and Cavalry of the Right, to guard Yinping Bridge. But the Later Sovereign, deeply trusting the words of a sorceress brought in by the eunuch Huang Hao, does not listen to Jiang Wei, and Huang Hao hides all the memorials in which Jiang Wei repeatedly reports the emergency. Romance, Ch. 116 §11–15

As Zhong Hui's great army advances toward Hanzhong, Xu Yi, vanguard of the front army, wanting to win the first merit, leads his troops ahead to the Nanzheng Pass and says that since there are not many men and horses on the pass, they should seize it by sheer force. But the Shu commander guarding the pass, Lu Xun, knowing early that the Wei army would come, had placed troops in ambush to the left and right of the wooden bridge before the pass and set up the ten-bolt repeating crossbows left by Marquis Wu. When Xu Yi's troops come to seize the pass, at a single clap of the wooden rattle arrows and stones pour down like rain, and by the time Xu Yi hastily withdraws, dozens of horsemen have already been shot down. Romance, Ch. 116 §15–16

When Zhong Hui, on receiving Xu Yi's report, comes in person leading more than a hundred armoured horsemen of his own guard to look, arrows and crossbow bolts indeed pour down all at once. As Zhong Hui turns his horse to go back, Lu Xun comes charging down from the pass leading 500 troops. Zhong Hui whips his horse across the bridge, but the earth on the bridge collapses and his horse's hooves sink in; when the horse struggles and cannot get up, Zhong Hui abandons it and goes on foot. As Zhong Hui runs down from the bridge, Lu Xun catches up and thrusts at him with his spear, but Xun Kai, among the Wei troops, turns round and shoots a single arrow, and Lu Xun falls from his horse. Romance, Ch. 116 §17

Zhong Hui directs his host to take advantage of the moment and storm the pass, and the soldiers on the pass, who dare not shoot because the Shu troops are in front of it, are cut down and scattered by Zhong Hui. Zhong Hui seizes the mountain pass, makes Xun Kai Protector of the Army and grants him a saddled horse and a full suit of armour. He then rebukes Xu Yi, saying that as the vanguard he did not repair the bridges and roads, so that Zhong Hui himself nearly fell from the bridge, and, refusing even the commanders who plead for mercy on account of the merit of his father Xu Chu, has him beheaded and displayed to the host. The Romance does not record what became of Lu Xun after he fell from his horse. Romance, Ch. 116 §17–20
