Profile
Hua Yong is a Wei commander who appears in Chapter 110 of the Romance. When Jiang Wei reaches the Tao River with 50,000 troops and draws up his formation with his back to the water, Wang Jing, Inspector of Yong Province, turns to four commanders, Zhang Ming, Hua Yong, Liu Da and Zhu Fang, has them fight Jiang Wei, and tells them that if he falls back they are to pursue and strike at once. Romance, Ch. 110 §34–35
The four commanders ride out, divided to left and right, and fight Jiang Wei, but when Jiang Wei, after a few light bouts, flees, Wang Jing's army gives chase, is surrounded by the Shu troops who turn and strike back and by Zhang Yi and Xiahou Ba, who come round from behind, and suffers a crushing defeat. Romance, Ch. 110 §36–37
He appears in only one of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 110, and his name is in no chapter title. His name occurs only once, in the passage where Wang Jing turns to his four commanders, and what became of Hua Yong in this battle is not recorded. He appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Romance, Ch. 110 §35–37
In the Romance
In Chapter 110 of the Romance, Sima Shi, having led his army back to Xuchang, dies; the time is the 2nd month of the 2nd year of Zhengyuan (255). Sima Zhao, who succeeds him, becomes General-in-Chief and Intendant of the Affairs of the Imperial Secretariat and holds all affairs great and small, inside and outside the court, in his hands. When spies from Western Shu report this, Jiang Wei asks the Later Sovereign to let him attack Wei while the opportunity lasts, saying that Sima Zhao has only just taken power and will not dare leave Luoyang lightly, and the Later Sovereign agrees. Romance, Ch. 110 §26–31
When Jiang Wei reaches Hanzhong, Zhang Yi, General-in-Chief Who Conquers the West, urges him not to campaign far afield because the land of Shu is small and its money and grain are scarce, but Jiang Wei refuses to listen, saying that he has received the Chancellor's dying charge and must carry on his purpose. Xiahou Ba proposes going out first to Fuhan with light cavalry, and Zhang Yi too urges advancing with all speed. When Jiang Wei, leading 50,000 troops toward Fuhan, reaches the Tao River, Wang Jing, Inspector of Yong Province, raises 70,000 horse and foot and comes to meet him. Jiang Wei sends Zhang Yi and Xiahou Ba off with instructions for a plan, and himself leads the main army and draws up his formation with his back to the Tao River. Romance, Ch. 110 §31–34
When Wang Jing comes out with several officers of his guard and asks why, now that Wei, Wu and Shu already stand apart like the three legs of a tripod, Jiang Wei invades again and again, Jiang Wei answers that Sima Shi deposed his sovereign without cause, so that even a neighboring state ought to call him to account, let alone an enemy state. Wang Jing turns to his four commanders, Zhang Ming, Hua Yong, Liu Da and Zhu Fang, and says that the Shu army has drawn up with its back to the water, so that if it is defeated all will drown; Jiang Wei is swift and brave, so the four commanders are to fight him and, if he falls back, pursue and strike at once. Romance, Ch. 110 §35–36
The four commanders ride out, divided to left and right, and fight Jiang Wei. After a few light bouts Jiang Wei turns his horse and flees toward his own lines, and Wang Jing drives his whole force of men and horses after him at once. Jiang Wei leads his troops in flight toward the Tao River, and as they come close to the water he shouts to his officers and men that the situation is desperate; the commanders all exert themselves together and turn to fight their way back in, and the Wei army is crushingly defeated. Romance, Ch. 110 §36
Zhang Yi and Xiahou Ba come round behind the Wei army, attack along two routes and hem it in on all sides. More than half the Wei troops die trampling one another, countless more are driven into the Tao River and drown, over ten thousand heads are taken, and the corpses lie piled for several li. Wang Jing flees with a hundred horsemen of his defeated troops to the city of Didao, where he shuts the gates and holds out. The Romance does not record what became of Hua Yong and the other three commanders in this battle, and it does not bring Hua Yong on again. Romance, Ch. 110 §37
