He has no biography of his own in the Records, and in Chen Shou's main text he appears once each in the Annals of Emperor Wu in Records of Wei 1, in the passage on Yuan Shu in the Biographies of Dong, the Two Yuans and Liu in Records of Wei 6, and in the passage on Cao Hong in the Biographies of the Xiahou and Cao Clans in Records of Wei 9. Records, Wei 1 §13Records, Wei 6 §73Records, Wei 9 §49

In the 4th year of Chuping (193) he was killed by Yuan Shu, who had fled to Jiujiang after a heavy defeat by Cao Cao and Yuan Shao, and Yuan Shu took charge of his province. In the Records

When Cao Cao raised a loyalist army to attack Dong Zhuo, reached Xingyang and was defeated by Dong Zhuo's general Xu Rong, he went with Xiahou Dun and others to Yang Province to raise troops, because his troops were few. Chen Wen, Inspector of Yang Province, and Zhou Xin, Administrator of Danyang, gave him over four thousand troops, but on the way back, when they reached Longkang, many of the soldiers deserted. Records, Wei 9 §48Records, Wei 1 §13

Chen Wen had long been on good terms with Cao Hong. Cao Hong led over a thousand of his household troops to Chen Wen and recruited soldiers there, obtaining two thousand picked armored men of Lujiang; going east to Danyang, he obtained several thousand more and joined Cao Cao at Longkang. Records, Wei 9 §49

In spring of the 4th year of Chuping (193), Yuan Shu, his supply route cut off by Liu Biao, Governor of Jing Province, led his army into Chenliu and camped at Fengqiu. Cao Cao attacked him together with Yuan Shao and crushed Yuan Shu's army, and Yuan Shu fled by way of Xiangyi and Ningling to Jiujiang. The Biographies of Dong, the Two Yuans and Liu record that Yuan Shu fled to Jiujiang with the remnants of his host, killed Chen Wen, Inspector of Yang Province, and took charge of the province. Records, Wei 1 §25Records, Wei 6 §73

These three passages are the only places in Chen Shou's main text where Chen Wen appears. His courtesy name, his origin and when he became Inspector of Yang Province are not recorded, and the Records contain no assessment of him either. Records, Wei 1 §13Records, Wei 6 §73Records, Wei 9 §49
