Chen Shou's main text does not give the name of the office among the Three Excellencies that he held, nor the course of his life. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wei 21 §2
In the Records
Wang Can, courtesy name Zhongxuan, was a native of Gaoping County in Shanyang Commandery. Chen Shou wrote that Wang Can's great-grandfather Wang Gong (王龔) and grandfather Wang Chang (王暢) had both served among the Three Excellencies of the Han. Records, Wei 21 §2
Wang Can's father Wang Qian was Chief Clerk to the General-in-Chief He Jin. Because Wang Qian was a descendant of famous ducal ministers, He Jin wished to form a marriage alliance with him, showed him his two sons and had him choose between them, but Wang Qian refused. Wang Qian was dismissed on account of illness and died at home. Records, Wei 21 §2
When Emperor Xian moved west, Wang Can also moved to Chang'an. Cai Yong, General of the Household of the Left, on hearing that Wang Can was at his gate, rushed out to greet him with his shoes on backwards, and to the company, who were astonished to see how young and small he was, he said, 'This is the grandson of Lord Wang; he has extraordinary talent, and I am not his equal.' Records, Wei 21 §3
Beyond this, Chen Shou's main text does not record Wang Chang's own courtesy name, place of origin, the offices he held or the course of his life. Records, Wei 21 §2
