Profile

Wei Yan (衛演) is a Palace Attendant of Gongsun Yuan of Liaodong who appears in Chapter 106 of the Romance. When the food runs out in the city of Xiangping, besieged by Sima Yi's army, the Chancellor of State Wang Jian and the Imperial Counselor Liu Fu, whom Gongsun Yuan has sent first, are beheaded by Sima Yi, who angrily asks why Gongsun Yuan does not come himself, and Gongsun Yuan, greatly alarmed, sends him next to the Wei camp. Romance, Ch. 106 §21–22

Wei Yan crawls in on his knees, kneels below the command tent, and reports that on a set day they will first send the heir Gongsun Xiu as a hostage, after which ruler and ministers will bind themselves and come to surrender. Sima Yi rebukes him and sends him back, saying that if one cannot fight one defends, if one cannot defend one flees, if one cannot flee one surrenders, and if one cannot surrender one simply dies, so what need is there to send a son as a hostage; and Wei Yan, clutching his head, scurries away like a rat. Romance, Ch. 106 §22–23

Of the Romance's 120 chapters he appears in only one, Chapter 106, and no chapter has his name in its title. The Biographies of the Two Gongsuns, Tao and the Four Zhangs in Chen Shou's main text records only that on the renwu day of the 8th month of the 2nd year of Jingchu (238), when Gongsun Yuan's host collapsed, Gongsun Yuan broke through the siege with his son Gongsun Xiu and fled but was beheaded; the name of Wei Yan (衛演) appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary.
