Profile
Liu Lu is a figure whose name appears in the genealogy of Liu Bei's family read out by the Minister of the Imperial Clan in Chapter 20 of the Romance. The genealogy begins with Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, the seventh son of Emperor Xiaojing, and reads: 'Liu Zhen begot Liu Ang, Marquis of Pei. Liu Ang begot Liu Lu, Marquis of Zhang. Liu Lu begot Liu Lian, Marquis of Yishui.' In the genealogy he is the son of Liu Ang, Marquis of Pei, and the father of Liu Lian, Marquis of Yishui, and the line passes through Liu Xiong and Liu Hong down to Liu Bei. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–6
He appears in only one of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 20, and his name is in no chapter title. His name appears only in the one passage where the genealogy is read, and no deeds of his are recorded apart from his title. He does not appear in Chen Shou's main text or in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biography of the First Sovereign in Chen Shou's main text records only that Liu Bei was a descendant of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, and that Liu Sheng's son Liu Zhen was enfeoffed as Marquis of Lucheng Neighborhood in Zhuo County in the 6th year of Yuanshou (117 BCE), lost his marquisate over the matter of the tribute gold and settled there with his family; it does not record the number of generations or their names from then down to his grandfather Liu Xiong. In the Romance
In Chapter 20 of the Romance, Cao Cao, having defeated Lü Bu, has Lü Bu's wife and daughter carried back to Xudu and returns in triumph. As he passes through Xu Province, the people burn incense, block the road and ask that Lord Liu be left with them as their Governor, and Cao Cao replies that it will not be too late for him to come back after he has seen the Son of Heaven and received a title. Back in Xuchang, Cao Cao lodges Xuande in a residence near the Chancellor's headquarters. Romance, Ch. 20 §3
The next day, when Emperor Xian holds court, Cao Cao submits a memorial reporting Xuande's military merits and brings him to see the emperor. Asked by the emperor who his ancestors were, Xuande replies that he is a descendant of Prince Jing of Zhongshan and a great-great-grandson of Emperor Xiaojing, the grandson of Liu Xiong and the son of Liu Hong. The emperor has the genealogy of the imperial clan brought for inspection and has the Minister of the Imperial Clan read it aloud. Romance, Ch. 20 §4
The genealogy says that Emperor Xiaojing had fourteen sons and that the seventh son was Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, and reads that Liu Sheng begot Liu Zhen, Marquis of Lucheng Neighborhood, and Liu Zhen begot Liu Ang, Marquis of Pei. It then says, 'Liu Ang begot Liu Lu, Marquis of Zhang. Liu Lu begot Liu Lian, Marquis of Yishui,' and goes on to say that Liu Lian begot Liu Ying, Marquis of Qinyang, and Liu Ying begot Liu Jian, Marquis of Anguo. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–5
The genealogy goes on reading out the names and fiefs of generation after generation, and ends: 'Liu Hui begot Liu Xiong, Prefect of Fan in Dong Commandery. Liu Xiong begot Liu Hong. Liu Hong did not take office. Liu Bei is the son of Liu Hong.' Reckoning the generations in the genealogy, Xuande turns out to be of the generation of the emperor's uncles, and the emperor, greatly pleased, invites him into a side hall, observes the courtesies between uncle and nephew, and then makes Xuande General of the Left and Marquis of Yicheng Neighborhood. From then on everyone calls him the Imperial Uncle Liu. Romance, Ch. 20 §6–7
