In the Romance

In Chapter 87 of the Romance, in the 3rd year of Jianxing (225), when Meng Huo, King of the Man, raises 100,000 Man soldiers and invades the border, Zhuge Liang personally leads a great army on campaign against him. Hearing that Zhuge Liang has defeated Yong Kai and the others by his wits, Meng Huo gathers the marshals of three caves to confer: the first cave is Jinhuan Sanjie, the second Dongtuna and the third Ahuinan. Saying that Chancellor Zhuge is invading their border with a great army and they have no choice but to join forces against him, Meng Huo has them advance along three routes and promises to make whoever wins a cave lord. Jinhuan Sanjie takes the central route, Dongtuna the left and Ahuinan the right, each advancing at the head of 50,000 Man soldiers. Romance, Ch. 87 §2–3 · 31–32

Saying that Zhao Yun and Wei Yan do not know the lie of the land, Zhuge Liang does not use them, and gives Wang Ping the left route, Ma Zhong the right route, and Zhang Ni and Zhang Yi the central route. Displeased, Zhao Yun and Wei Yan go out to reconnoiter in person, capture a few Man soldiers, and learn that ahead lies the great camp of the marshal Jinhuan Sanjie, and that the eastern and western roads beside it lead to Wuxi Cave and to the rear of the camps of Dongtuna and Ahuinan. The two attack Jinhuan Sanjie's camp with 5,000 picked troops, and after Zhao Yun spears Jinhuan Sanjie from his horse in a single bout and cuts off his head, Wei Yan goes by the eastern road to attack Dongtuna's camp and Zhao Yun by the western road to attack Ahuinan's camp. Romance, Ch. 87 §33–35 · 37–39

When Zhao Yun breaks into the rear of Ahuinan's camp, Ma Zhong has already fought his way to the front of it, and caught between attacks from front and rear the Man soldiers are badly defeated, while Ahuinan escapes in the confusion. The generals say that Dongtuna and Ahuinan both abandoned their horses and fled over the ridge so they could not catch them, but Zhuge Liang laughs that he has already captured the two, and a little later Zhang Yi brings in Ahuinan under escort. Zhuge Liang explains that he knew from Lü Kai's maps where they had pitched their camps, and that, foreseeing that Dongtuna and Ahuinan would flee along the mountain paths by the shortcut, he had Zhang Ni and Zhang Yi wait in ambush and had Guan Suo lend support. Then he has the bonds of both men removed, gives them wine, food and clothing, and tells each to return to his cave and not to aid evil. The two weep and bow, and each leaves by a byway. Romance, Ch. 87 §40–44

In Chapter 88, when the released Meng Huo crosses the Lu River, sets up camp and gathers the chieftains of the various caves, Dongtuna and Ahuinan, who have already returned to their caves, are afraid when Meng Huo sends men to summon them and have no choice but to come with their cave troops. Zhuge Liang instructs Ma Dai to cross the river at Shakou on the lower reaches of the Lu River, first cut off the grain of the Man caves, and then join the two cave lords Dongtuna and Ahuinan and have them act as an inside force. When Ma Dai cuts the grain route at Jiashan and kills Mangyachang, Meng Huo gives Dongtuna 3,000 troops to hold off Ma Dai, and, worried that someone may cross the Lu River again, has Ahuinan lead 3,000 troops to guard Shakou. Romance, Ch. 88 §1–3 · 8 · 13–16

Dongtuna, rebuked by Ma Dai, withdraws without fighting and receives a hundred blows of the great cudgel from Meng Huo; then, heeding the chieftains, he leads a hundred or so men to the main camp, and the two generals attending below the tent bind the dead-drunk Meng Huo and take him across to the north bank of the Lu River. Meng Huo refuses to submit, saying that this time it was because his own men turned on one another, and Zhuge Liang releases him again. Back in his own camp, Meng Huo first sets swordsmen and axemen in ambush below his tent, sends trusted men to the camps of Dongtuna and Ahuinan on the pretext that an envoy from Zhuge Liang has arrived, lures both men into the main camp below the tent, kills them both and throws their bodies into a mountain stream. Ahuinan does not appear in the Romance after this. Romance, Ch. 88 §16–20 · 22–23 · 25
