Profile

Wuhuanchu was the Inspector of You Province who appears in Chapter 33 of the Romance. When Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi fled from Cao Cao's army to the Wuhuan in Liaoxi, he gathered the officials of You Province and had them drink blood and swear to turn against the Yuan family and go over to Cao Cao. He let Han Heng, the Attendant Officer with Separate Carriage who refused to follow, do as he pleased, then left the city to welcome the three columns of troops, surrendered to Cao Cao and became General Who Guards the North. Romance, Ch. 33 §23–25

Of the Romance's 120 chapters he appears only in Chapter 33, and no chapter has his name in its title. The name Wuhuanchu appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biographies of Dong, the Two Yuans and Liu in Chen Shou's main text record this oath as the doing of Yuan Xi's general Jiao Chu: Jiao Chu styled himself Inspector of You Province, slaughtered a white horse and had them swear, and proposed that Han Heng be allowed to fulfill his resolve as an encouragement to those who serve their lord. In the same chapter the Romance separately portrays Jiao Chu as a commander who had already surrendered to Cao Cao. Romance, Ch. 33 §23 · 19–20 · 22Records, Wei 6 §68–69

In the Romance

In Chapter 33 of the Romance, after Yuan Tan was killed by Cao Hong and Cao Cao entered Nanpi, Yuan Xi's subordinate generals Jiao Chu and Zhang Nan came over in surrender with their spears reversed, and Cao Cao enfeoffed them as full marquises. When Cao Cao asked for a plan to attack Yuan Shang, who had taken refuge with Yuan Xi, Guo Jia advised having Jiao Chu, Zhang Nan and the other surrendered commanders of the Yuan attack them themselves; following this advice, Cao Cao had Jiao Chu, Zhang Nan and the others each lead the troops of his own command and attack You Province by three routes. Romance, Ch. 33 §19–20 · 22

Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi, knowing that Cao Cao's army would soon arrive and judging that they could not withstand it, abandoned their city, fled through the night to Liaoxi and took refuge with the Wuhuan. Wuhuanchu, Inspector of You Province, gathered the officials of You Province, had them drink blood and swear an oath, and deliberated with them on turning against the Yuan family and going over to Cao Cao. Wuhuanchu spoke first, saying that he knew Chancellor Cao to be the hero of the age, that he would now go and surrender, and that anyone who did not obey the order would be beheaded. Romance, Ch. 33 §23

When they had drunk the blood in turn and it came to the Attendant Officer with Separate Carriage Han Heng, Han Heng flung his sword to the ground and cried out that he had received great kindness from Lord Yuan and his sons, and that now that his lord had been defeated and destroyed he had lacked the wisdom to save him and the courage to die with him, so he had already fallen short in righteousness; he would not face north and surrender to Cao Cao. Everyone turned pale, but Wuhuanchu said that one who undertakes a great enterprise must uphold great righteousness and that whether it succeeds does not depend on one man; since Han Heng held such a resolve, he should be left to do as he pleased, and Wuhuanchu had him pushed out. Romance, Ch. 33 §23–24

Wuhuanchu left the city to welcome the three columns of troops and came straight to Cao Cao to surrender. Cao Cao, greatly pleased, made him General Who Guards the North. Wuhuanchu's name does not appear again in the Romance after this. Romance, Ch. 33 §25
