Profile

Wei Miao was a general of Wu. He has no separate biography in the Records and appears once, in the account of Sun Chen in the Biographies of Zhuge Ke, Teng Yin, the Two Suns and Puyang Xing (Records of Wu 19). When Sun Chen asked to go out and garrison Wuchang and Sun Xiu granted it, Wei Miao urged Sun Xiu that 'if Sun Chen is stationed outside, there will surely be a revolt.' When the Martial Guardsman Shi Shuo also reported that there were signs that Sun Chen intended to rebel, Sun Xiu secretly consulted Zhang Bu, and Zhang Bu plotted with Ding Feng to kill Sun Chen at a banquet. Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name, his origin, his later career or his death. Records, Wu 19 §98

In the Romance he appears in Chapter 113 as a general who, together with the Martial Guardsman Shi Shuo, secretly warns Sun Xiu of Sun Chen's coming revolt, and who, taking charge of matters outside the palace with Ding Feng and Shi Shuo, seizes and brings in Sun Chen's brothers. He appears in only this one chapter of the 120, and no chapter title bears his name. Romance, Ch. 113 §16–17 · 21

In the Records

After Sun Xiu took the throne, Sun Chen became Chancellor and Governor of Jing Province, and five men of Sun Chen's family became marquises, all of them commanding the palace guards, so that his power overshadowed the sovereign. Sun Chen brought beef and wine to Sun Xiu, and when Sun Xiu would not accept them he took them to the General of the Left Zhang Bu, and when the drinking was well along he spoke resentful words, saying that he would have to change his plans again. Zhang Bu reported this to Sun Xiu, who harbored it in his heart but, fearing a revolt, bestowed rewards on Sun Chen many times. Records, Wu 19 §95–97

When someone reported that Sun Chen harbored resentment, slighted the sovereign and meant to plot rebellion, Sun Xiu seized the man and handed him over to Sun Chen, who killed him. Growing ever more fearful because of this, Sun Chen asked through Meng Zong (Meng Ren) to go out and garrison Wuchang. Sun Xiu granted this, had the more than ten thousand elite troops of the Central Camp under Sun Chen's command all load up their baggage, and had all the weapons Sun Chen took from the armory handed over as well. Records, Wu 19 §98

At this time the general Wei Miao urged Sun Xiu that 'if Sun Chen is stationed outside, there will surely be a revolt', and the Martial Guardsman Shi Shuo also reported that 'there are signs that Sun Chen intends to rebel.' Sun Xiu secretly consulted Zhang Bu, and Zhang Bu plotted with Ding Feng to kill Sun Chen at a banquet. Records, Wu 19 §98

At the La festival banquet on the wuchen day of the 12th month of the 1st year of Yong'an (early 259 CE), Sun Chen pleaded illness, but when Sun Xiu sent messengers more than ten times, he had no choice but to go in. Soon afterwards a fire broke out and Sun Chen asked to leave, but Sun Xiu stopped him, saying that there were plenty of troops outside and no need to trouble the Chancellor, and when Sun Chen rose and left his seat, Ding Feng and Zhang Bu signalled with their eyes to their attendants to bind him. Sun Xiu beheaded Sun Chen and exterminated his family to the third degree. In Chen Shou's main text, Wei Miao's name appears only in this one place in the account of Sun Chen, and the part he played in the coup is not recorded. The assessment in Records of Wu 19 does not discuss him either. Records, Wu 19 §99–101 · 108–109

In the Romance

In Chapter 113 of the Romance, after Sun Xiu takes the throne, five men of Sun Chen's family become marquises and all command the palace guards, so Sun Xiu, fearing that he will start a revolt from within, outwardly bestows favor on him while inwardly guarding against him. In the 12th month of winter, Sun Chen brings beef and wine into the palace to wish the sovereign long life, and when Sun Xiu will not accept them, he angrily drinks with the General of the Left Zhang Bu in Zhang Bu's residence and tells him to wait and see before long; the next day Zhang Bu secretly reports this to Sun Xiu. Romance, Ch. 113 §14–16

A few days later Sun Chen allots 15,000 elite troops under the Central Camp to the Gentleman of the Palace Secretariat Meng Zong (Meng Ren), has him go out to garrison Wuchang, and hands over every weapon in the armory. Thereupon the general Wei Miao and the Martial Guardsman Shi Shuo secretly report to Sun Xiu that 'Sun Chen has moved troops outside and carried off every weapon in the armory, so before long he will surely rise in revolt.' Romance, Ch. 113 §16

Greatly alarmed, Sun Xiu consults Zhang Bu on a plan, and the veteran general Ding Feng, recommended by Zhang Bu, proposes inviting Sun Chen to a banquet on the pretext of a great gathering of the ministers on the La festival day. Ding Feng takes charge of matters outside the palace together with Wei Miao and Shi Shuo, and Zhang Bu is to act from within. Romance, Ch. 113 §17

At the banquet, when a fire breaks out outside the palace and Sun Chen tries to rise, Sun Xiu stops him, and the General of the Left Zhang Bu, leading more than thirty armed men, rushes up into the hall, seizes Sun Chen and beheads him on the east side of the hall. When Ding Feng, Wei Miao, Shi Shuo and others seize and bring in Sun Chen's brothers, Sun Xiu orders them all beheaded in the marketplace and exterminates his family to the third degree. In the Romance, Wei Miao's name appears only in this passage of Chapter 113. Romance, Ch. 113 §19–21
