Profile
Tu'an is a military chieftain of the Kingdom of Wuge who appears in Chapter 90 of the Romance. When Meng Huo asked Wutugu, lord of the Kingdom of Wuge, for help, Wutugu summoned his two troop-leading chieftains, Tu'an and Xini, and raised 30,000 troops clad in rattan armor. Romance, Ch. 90 §33
Wutugu had the two chieftains lead the Rattan Armor troops across the river to fight the Shu army, and Wei Yan, under Kongming's orders, lost every engagement and fled. On the sixteenth day, Wutugu and the 30,000 Rattan Armor troops pursued Wei Yan into Panshe Valley and were burned to death inside it. Romance, Ch. 90 §42 · 44–45 · 48 · 51
He appears only in Chapter 90, 1 of the Romance's 120 chapters, and his name is in no chapter title. His name occurs only once, where Wutugu summons him; after that he appears only as one of "the two chieftains" together with Xini. Romance, Ch. 90 §33 · 44–45
In the Romance
In Chapter 90 of the Romance, Meng Huo, having lost his cave stronghold to the Shu army, gathered his defeated troops and consulted the Dailai Cave Chief about where to take refuge. The Dailai Cave Chief named Wutugu, lord of the Kingdom of Wuge 700 li to the southeast, and said that his soldiers wore armor of rattan soaked in oil and dried more than ten times over, so that they did not sink when crossing rivers and neither blade nor arrow could pierce them; they were called the Rattan Armor troops. Romance, Ch. 90 §31–33
When Meng Huo went to the Kingdom of Wuge, bowed again and again before Wutugu, who lived in an earthen cave, and lamented all that had happened, Wutugu promised to raise the troops of his cave and avenge him, and summoned his troop-leading chieftains Tu'an and Xini. The 30,000 troops, all in rattan armor, left the Kingdom of Wuge and marched northeast, and Wutugu's army pitched camp at Peach Blossom Ford on the Peach Blossom River, whose water killed people of other lands who drank it but doubled the vigor of the people of Wuge, and waited for the Shu army. Romance, Ch. 90 §33–34
Meng Huo warned that Zhuge Liang would in the end resort to ambushes and that they must not advance rashly into places thick with trees, and Wutugu said he would fight in front while Meng Huo directed from behind. When word came that the Shu army had pitched camp on the north bank of Peach Blossom Ford, Wutugu sent the two chieftains to lead the Rattan Armor troops across the river to fight, and Wei Yan fled after only a few bouts. The next day the barbarian troops crossed the river again, chased him more than 10 li and stayed in the Shu camp, and the day after that the two chieftains invited Wutugu to the camp and reported this, whereupon Wutugu led his army forward in force. Romance, Ch. 90 §43–45
Following Kongming's orders to lose fifteen battles in a row and abandon seven camps within half a month, Wei Yan fled each time toward the white banners, while Wutugu would not advance wherever flags could be seen among thick woods and rejoiced with Meng Huo that they had seen through Zhuge Liang's plan. On the sixteenth day Wutugu pursued Wei Yan into Panshe Valley, where there was neither grass nor tree; with the mouth of the valley blocked by logs, stones and dry firewood, the fuses buried in the ground caught fire, and Wutugu and the 30,000 Rattan Armor troops were burned to death inside Panshe Valley, clinging to one another. In this passage the Romance does not mention Tu'an by name. Romance, Ch. 90 §42 · 47–51
Kongming explained that he had used fire because rattan armor, though impervious to blade and arrow, was soaked in oil and would surely catch fire, and said that wiping out the people of the Kingdom of Wuge so that not even their seed remained was his own great crime. Romance, Ch. 90 §58–59
