The Dailai Cave Chief is Meng Huo's wife's brother who appears in Chapter 90 of the Romance, and is chief of the Eight Tribes. When Meng Huo asks how to take revenge on the Shu army, he recommends King Mulu, chief of Bana Cave, who is deeply versed in sorcery; and after King Mulu has died and Yinkeng Cave has been lost, he comes bringing Meng Huo, Lady Zhurong and several hundred of their clan as captives to present to Zhuge Liang. But Zhuge Liang judges this to be a feigned surrender and has them all seized and searched, and each of them is indeed found carrying a sharp knife. Romance, Ch. 90 §5 · 26–29
After being released, he advises Meng Huo, who asks where they might take refuge, to go to Wutugu of the Kingdom of Wuge, who commands the Rattan Armor Army. After Wutugu's troops are burned to death in Panshe Valley and Meng Huo is captured for the seventh time, he is with Lady Zhurong and Meng You at the table where Meng Huo is drinking wine in another tent. In the Romance
In Chapter 90 of the Romance, when Meng Huo, released by Zhuge Liang and back at Yinkeng Cave, gathers more than a thousand of his clan and followers and asks whether anyone has a good idea, the Dailai Cave Chief, Meng Huo's wife's brother and now chief of the Eight Tribes, steps forward offering to recommend someone who can defeat Zhuge Liang. He says that King Mulu, chief of Bana Cave to the southwest, is deeply versed in sorcery: when he goes out he rides an elephant and summons wind and rain, he is always attended by tigers, leopards, jackals and wolves, venomous snakes and poisonous scorpions, and he has thirty thousand divine soldiers under him. He adds that if the Great King writes a letter and prepares gifts, he will go in person to ask for his help, and Meng Huo gladly has the royal brother-in-law carry the letter. Romance, Ch. 90 §1 · 5–6
King Mulu, who promises to avenge him, chants spells, drives out his wild beasts and repels Zhao Yun and Wei Yan. But the next day, when the wooden beasts Zhuge Liang had prepared in Shu advance spouting flames from their mouths and black smoke from their noses, the real beasts turn and flee, trampling the Man soldiers instead, and King Mulu dies amid the confusion of battle. Meng Huo's clan abandon their palace and flee, and Zhuge Liang's main army occupies Yinkeng Cave. Romance, Ch. 90 §19–26
The next day word comes that the Dailai Cave Chief urged Meng Huo to surrender and, when Meng Huo would not agree, seized Meng Huo, Lady Zhurong and several hundred of their clan and means to present them to the Chancellor. Zhuge Liang has Zhang Ni and Ma Zhong hide two thousand strong, picked soldiers in the two side corridors, and when the Dailai Cave Chief, at the head of swordsmen and axemen, brings in Meng Huo and the others, several hundred in all, and they bow below the hall, he has them all seized. Zhuge Liang rebukes them: having seen that he did them no harm the two times people of their own cave captured Meng Huo and came to surrender, they assumed he would trust them deeply, and so came with a feigned surrender intending to kill him inside the cave. He has them searched, and each of them is indeed found carrying a sharp knife. When Meng Huo says that if he is captured a seventh time he will submit with all his heart, Zhuge Liang has all their bonds removed and sends them back. Romance, Ch. 90 §27–30
When Meng Huo, having gathered his defeated troops, discusses where they can take refuge now that his cave stronghold has been taken by the Shu army, the Dailai Cave Chief says there is just one kingdom that can defeat Shu and names the Kingdom of Wuge, seven hundred li to the southeast. He says that its ruler Wutugu is one zhang and two chi tall, eats none of the five grains but makes his meals of live snakes and fierce beasts, and has scales on his body that neither blade nor arrow can penetrate, and that his soldiers wear armor of rattan soaked in oil and dried more than ten times over, so that they do not sink when crossing rivers and neither blade nor arrow can pierce them. At his words that with Wutugu's help capturing Zhuge Liang would be like splitting bamboo with a sharp knife, Meng Huo is overjoyed, goes to the Kingdom of Wuge and obtains Wutugu's Rattan Armor Army of thirty thousand. Romance, Ch. 90 §31–33
But Wutugu and his thirty thousand Rattan Armor troops, lured by Wei Yan into Panshe Valley, are burned to death there, and Meng Huo is taken alive by Ma Dai. While Meng Huo is drinking wine with Lady Zhurong, Meng You, the Dailai Cave Chief and his clan in another tent where Zhuge Liang has had wine and food served, a man comes in and tells him that the Chancellor is releasing him once more. Saying that seven captures and seven releases have never happened since ancient times, Meng Huo kneels below the tent with his brothers, wife and children and clan, bares his shoulders to beg pardon and declares that the people of the south will never rebel again.
