Profile

Ding Feng (丁封) was the younger brother of the Wu general Ding Feng (丁奉). He has no biography of his own in the Records and appears twice in Chen Shou's main text. In the 6th year of Yong'an (263), when Wei attacked Shu, Wu sent the Grand General Ding Feng (丁奉) toward Shouchun while dispatching the general Ding Feng (丁封) and Sun Yi to Mianzhong to rescue Shu, but called this off when word arrived that Liu Shan, the ruler of Shu, had surrendered to Wei. The end of his elder brother's biography records that he reached the post of General of the Rear and died before his brother. Records, Wu 3 §43–44Records, Wu 10 §107

In the Romance he appears in only one of its 120 chapters, Chapter 117, and he is not named in any chapter title. When Zhuge Zhan, trapped in Mianzhu, asks Eastern Wu for help, Sun Xiu, the ruler of Wu, makes the veteran general Ding Feng (丁奉) commander-in-chief and Ding Feng (丁封) and Sun Yi lieutenant commanders to rescue Shu, and Ding Feng (丁封), together with Sun Yi, receives a share of 20,000 troops and advances on Mianzhong. Romance, Ch. 117 §41–42

In the Records

In the 10th month of winter in the 6th year of Yong'an (263), Shu reported to Wu that it was under attack by Wei. On the day jiashen, Sun Xiu had the Grand General Ding Feng (丁奉) lead the armies toward Shouchun in Wei, sent the general Liu Ping separately to Shi Ji in Nan Commandery to discuss where to direct the army, and had the generals Ding Feng (丁封) and Sun Yi go to Mianzhong. All this was to rescue Shu. Only when word arrived that Liu Shan, the ruler of Shu, had surrendered to Wei did they call it off. Records, Wu 3 §43–44

The biography of his elder brother Ding Feng (丁奉) likewise records that in the 6th year of Yong'an (263), when Wei attacked Shu, Ding Feng (丁奉) led the armies toward Shouchun to create the appearance of relieving Shu, and brought the army back when Shu fell. Records, Wu 10 §105

Ding Feng (丁奉) was a man of Anfeng County in Lujiang; after welcoming and setting up Sun Hao he became Grand Marshal of the Right and Left Military Adviser, and he died in the 3rd year of Jianheng (271). The end of his biography records that Ding Feng (丁奉)'s younger brother Ding Feng (丁封) reached the post of General of the Rear but died before Ding Feng (丁奉). Records, Wu 10 §98 · 106–107

These two passages are the only places in Chen Shou's main text where the name of Ding Feng (丁封) appears. His courtesy name, his own origin, when he became General of the Rear, and the year and cause of his death are not recorded. Records, Wu 3 §44Records, Wu 10 §107

In the Romance

In Chapter 117 of the Romance, Zhuge Zhan, badly defeated by Deng Ai's ambush, withdraws to Mianzhu and is surrounded by the Wei army as tightly as an iron bucket, so he gives Peng He a letter and has him break through the encirclement to ask Eastern Wu for help. Sun Xiu, the ruler of Wu, reads the letter and, saying that with Shu in danger he cannot simply sit and watch without helping, consults his ministers. Romance, Ch. 117 §40–42

Sun Xiu makes the veteran general Ding Feng (丁奉) commander-in-chief and Ding Feng (丁封) and Sun Yi lieutenant commanders, sending them with 50,000 troops to rescue Shu. Ding Feng (丁奉), receiving the command, sets out, assigns 20,000 troops to Ding Feng (丁封) and Sun Yi to advance on Mianzhong, and himself leads 30,000 troops toward Shouchun, so that the relief comes along three routes. Romance, Ch. 117 §42

Meanwhile, when no relief arrives, Zhuge Zhan declares that holding out long is no good plan, sallies out of the city to fight, is struck by an arrow, falls from his horse and cuts his own throat. After this the Romance records nothing more of Ding Feng (丁封), saying only in Chapter 119 that the Wu general Ding Feng (丁奉), seeing that Shu had already fallen, withdrew his troops and returned to Wu. Romance, Ch. 117 §43–44Romance, Ch. 119 §23

Where the Romance differs

The request for help: In Chapter 117 of the Romance, Zhuge Zhan, trapped in Mianzhu, sends Peng He to ask Sun Xiu, the ruler of Wu, for help. The Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers in the Records say only that in the 10th month of winter in the 6th year of Yong'an (263) Shu reported that it was under attack by Wei, and Peng He does not appear in Chen Shou's main text. Romance, Ch. 117 §41Records, Wu 3 §43

Organization and troop numbers: In Chapter 117 of the Romance, Ding Feng (丁奉) is commander-in-chief and Ding Feng (丁封) and Sun Yi are lieutenant commanders leading 50,000 troops, of whom 20,000 go to Mianzhong. The Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers in the Records state only that the Grand General Ding Feng (丁奉) was sent to Shouchun, Liu Ping to Shi Ji in Nan Commandery, and the generals Ding Feng (丁封) and Sun Yi to Mianzhong, without giving troop numbers. The branch in which Liu Ping went to Shi Ji does not appear in the Romance. Romance, Ch. 117 §42Records, Wu 3 §44

Aftermath: The Romance records nothing of Ding Feng (丁封) after Chapter 117. In the Records, the expedition was called off when word arrived that Liu Shan, the ruler of Shu, had surrendered, and the end of the biography of his elder brother Ding Feng (丁奉) records that Ding Feng (丁封) reached the post of General of the Rear and died before his brother.
