Profile

Deng Xian is a figure who appears in Chapter 94 of the Romance as Meng Da's nephew, the son of his sister. When Meng Da at Xincheng prepares to rise in revolt, Deng Xian, together with Meng Da's trusted man Li Fu, comes forward to Sima Yi with a written denunciation, and when Sima Yi's army surrounds Xincheng, he and Li Fu surrender the city and let Sima Yi in. Afterwards, by order of Cao Rui, the ruler of Wei, he guards Xincheng and Shangyong together with Li Fu. Romance, Ch. 94 §39 · 50–51

He appears in 2 of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapters 94 and 95, and is not named in any chapter title. He does not appear in Chen Shou's main text and is recorded only in Pei Songzhi's notes. The Annals of Emperor Ming in Chen Shou's main text say only that in the 12th month of the 1st year of Taihe (227; early 228 CE), when Meng Da, Grand Administrator of Xincheng, rebelled, the General of Agile Cavalry Sima Yi (Prince Xuan) was ordered to suppress him, and that in the 1st month of spring of the following year he took Xincheng, beheaded Meng Da and had his head sent on. In the Romance

In Chapter 94 of the Romance, Meng Da, who had surrendered to Wei, plans at Xincheng to raise the troops of Jincheng, Xincheng and Shangyong and attack Luoyang, and exchanges letters with Kongming. At that time Sima Yi, reinstated by an edict of Cao Rui, the ruler of Wei, and assembling the troops of the various routes at Wancheng, is visited by a member of the household of Shen Yi, Grand Administrator of Jincheng, who tells him in detail that Meng Da intends to rebel, and Meng Da's trusted man Li Fu and Meng Da's nephew Deng Xian also come forward together with a written denunciation. Saying that waiting for an imperial decree would be too late, Sima Yi has his army cover two days' march in one and drives it toward Xincheng. Romance, Ch. 94 §28–29 · 31 · 33–35 · 39 · 41

Xu Huang, struck in the forehead by an arrow shot by Meng Da, dies that night, and Sima Yi's army encircles Xincheng like an iron bucket. The next day, when troops on two routes under banners reading 'Shen Dan' and 'Shen Yi' attack from outside, Meng Da, taking them for relief forces, opens the city gates and sallies out, but when the two men shout, 'Rebel, do not flee!', he turns his horse to flee back into the city. Arrows rain down from the walls, however, and Li Fu and Deng Xian revile him loudly from the walls: 'We have already surrendered the city!' Meng Da, fighting his way out in flight, is run through by Shen Dan's spear and beheaded. Romance, Ch. 94 §47–50

Li Fu and Deng Xian throw open the city gates and welcome Sima Yi into the city. On hearing the news, Cao Rui has Meng Da's head displayed in the marketplace of Luoyang, gives Shen Dan and Shen Yi additional offices and has them follow Sima Yi on campaign, and has Li Fu and Deng Xian guard Xincheng and Shangyong. In Chapter 95, a scout returning to Kongming at Mount Qi reports that Sima Yi pressed on at double pace and reached Xincheng in eight days, and that with Shen Dan, Shen Yi, Li Fu and Deng Xian acting as inside accomplices, Meng Da was killed in the confusion of battle.
