Profile
Deng Liang was the son of Deng Zhi, General of Chariots and Cavalry of Shu. He has no biography of his own in the Records, and his name appears in two places in Chen Shou's main text. At the end of the Biography of Deng Zhi in Records of Shu 15 it is recorded that his son Deng Liang succeeded to the title, became a Gentleman of the Left Selection Bureau of the Masters of Writing during the Jingyao era, and served the Jin court as Administrator of Guanghan. The Commandant Escort of Imperial Equipages Deng Liang, who carried the letter of surrender and the seal and ribbon when the Later Sovereign, Liu Shan, surrendered to Deng Ai in the winter of the 1st year of Yanxing (263), appears in the Biography of the Later Sovereign in Records of Shu 3. In the Romance he appears only in Chapter 118, and no chapter has his name in its title. When the Later Sovereign decides to surrender on Qiao Zhou's advice, he appears as the Commandant Escort of Imperial Equipages who, together with the Palace Attendant Zhang Shao, accompanies Qiao Zhou to carry the imperial seal to Deng Ai at Luocheng. In the Records
Deng Zhi was a man of Xinye County in Yiyang Commandery. After Zhuge Liang died he became Army Instructor of the Front and General of the Front and was enfeoffed as Marquis of Yangwu Precinct; in the 6th year of Yanxi (243) he was promoted to General of Chariots and Cavalry, and he died in the 14th year of Yanxi (251). At the end of the Biography of Deng Zhi, Chen Shou wrote that his son Deng Liang succeeded to the title, became a Gentleman of the Left Selection Bureau of the Masters of Writing during the Jingyao era, and served the Jin court as Administrator of Guanghan. According to Records of Shu 3, in the summer of the 6th year of Jingyao (263) Wei ordered the General Who Conquers the West Deng Ai, the General Who Guards the West Zhong Hui and the Inspector of Yong Province Zhuge Xu to attack together along several routes, and that year the era name was changed to Yanxing. In winter, when Deng Ai defeated the General of the Guards Zhuge Zhan at Mianzhu, the Later Sovereign, Liu Shan, adopted the plan of the Grandee of Splendid Happiness Qiao Zhou, surrendered to Deng Ai and submitted a letter. At the end of that letter the Later Sovereign said that he was sending the Palace Attendant Zhang Shao, the Grandee of Splendid Happiness Qiao Zhou and the Commandant Escort of Imperial Equipages Deng Liang, appointed on his own authority, to carry the seal and ribbon, to ask for his fate and declare his sincerity, and that the decision of life or death was left solely to Deng Ai's discretion. That day Liu Chen, the Prince of Beidi, grieving at the fall of the state, killed his wife and children and then took his own life. Zhang Shao and Deng Liang met Deng Ai at Luo County. On receiving the letter Deng Ai was overjoyed and at once wrote a reply, sending Zhang Shao and Deng Liang back ahead; afterwards, when Deng Ai reached the north of the city, the Later Sovereign, with a coffin loaded on a cart and his own hands bound, went to the gate of his camp. Deng Liang does not appear again in the Biography of the Later Sovereign after this, nor does he appear in the assessments of Records of Shu 3 and 15. Records, Shu 3 §46 · 53Records, Shu 15 §85
In the Romance
In Chapter 118 of the Romance, on hearing that Deng Ai has taken Mianzhu and that Zhuge Zhan and his son have died, the Later Sovereign, Liu Shan, summons his officials to deliberate. When some propose fleeing to Nanzhong or taking refuge with Wu, the Grandee of Splendid Happiness Qiao Zhou urges surrender to Wei. Liu Chen, the Prince of Beidi, comes out from behind a screen and rebukes Qiao Zhou, but the Later Sovereign has his close attendants push him out of the palace gate and has Qiao Zhou draft the letter of surrender. The Later Sovereign sends the Palace Attendant Zhang Shao and the Commandant Escort of Imperial Equipages Deng Liang, appointed on his own authority, together with Qiao Zhou to carry the imperial seal to Luocheng and ask to surrender. When the three men prostrate themselves below the steps and present the document of surrender and the imperial seal, Deng Ai is overjoyed, treats Zhang Shao, Qiao Zhou, Deng Liang and the others generously, and writes a reply for them to take back to Chengdu to calm the people's hearts. Romance, Ch. 118 §7–8
The three return to Chengdu, present the reply to the Later Sovereign and report in detail how well Deng Ai treated them. The Later Sovereign, overjoyed, has the Minister Coachman Jiang Xian carry an edict ordering Jiang Wei to surrender quickly.
