Profile
Cao Ji was a son of Cao Cao, Emperor Wu of Wei, and his mother was Concubine Liu. He died young; in the 5th year of Taihe (231) he was posthumously enfeoffed and given a posthumous name, but he had no heir. His biography is headed 'the Lord of Guangzong who died young'. Records, Wei 20 §2 · 64–65
He has only a short biography in the Biographies of the Princes and Dukes of Emperors Wu and Wen, Records of Wei 20, and Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name, his age or the year of his death. In his assessment at the end of the volume, Chen Shou said that the princes and dukes of Wei had only the name of a fief and none of the substance of a state, and that, hemmed in by prohibitions and surveillance, they were no different from men held in prison. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wei 20 §64–65 · 93
In the Records
Cao Cao, Emperor Wu, had twenty-five sons, and Concubine Liu bore Cao Ji, the Lord of Guangzong who died young. Records, Wei 20 §2
Cao Ji died young. In the 5th year of Taihe (231) he was posthumously enfeoffed and given a posthumous name, and he had no heir. This is the whole of his biography; his courtesy name, his age, and the year and cause of his death are not recorded. In the same volume, the biographies of Cao Shang (曹上), the Lord of Linyi who died young, Cao Qin, the Lord of Gang who died young, Cao Cheng, the Lord of Gucheng who died young, and Cao Jing, the Lord of Ling who died young, likewise say only that each died young, was posthumously enfeoffed and given a posthumous name in the 5th year of Taihe, and had no heir. Records, Wei 20 §65 · 47 · 54 · 56 · 61
In his assessment at the end of Records of Wei 20, Chen Shou said that the princes and dukes of Wei had only the name of states and lands and none of the substance of a state, were so hemmed in by prohibitions and surveillance that they were no different from men held in prison, and, their titles never being fixed, had their fiefs, large and small, changed year after year. He then lamented that the affection between flesh and blood had been perverted and the duty of the 'Changdi' ode cast aside, and asked whether the evils of the system had really come to this. Records, Wei 20 §93
