In the Romance
In Chapter 5 of the Romance, when Sun Jian, Administrator of Changsha, volunteered for the vanguard, Yuan Shao entrusted him with the task. When Sun Jian led his own troops to attack Sishui Pass, Dong Zhuo made Hua Xiong, a man from west of the passes who had stepped forward from behind Lü Bu, Colonel of Valiant Cavalry, gave him 50,000 horse and foot, and had him race through the night to the pass together with Li Su, Hu Zhen and Zhao Cen. Romance, Ch. 5 §17–19
Among the lords, Bao Xin, Chancellor of Jibei, fearing that Sun Jian, having already become the vanguard, would take the first merit, secretly gave his younger brother Bao Zhong 3,000 horse and foot to go ahead, cut straight across by a side road, reach the foot of the pass and challenge the enemy. When Hua Xiong swept down from the pass with 500 armored cavalry, shouting, 'Rebel general, do not flee!', Bao Zhong tried hastily to retreat, but Hua Xiong's hand rose, his blade fell, and Bao Zhong was cut down from his horse. Hua Xiong also captured a great many officers. Romance, Ch. 5 §20
Hua Xiong sent men to present Bao Zhong's head to the Chancellor's office and report the victory, and Dong Zhuo promoted Hua Xiong to Area Commander. After that, Sun Jian arrived before the pass with his four generals and gave battle. Romance, Ch. 5 §21–22
