Profile
Lady Huang was the wife of Zhuge Liang, introduced in Chapter 117 of the Romance as the mother of Zhuge Zhan and the daughter of Huang Chengyan. The Romance writes that although she was very plain in appearance she had extraordinary talent: above she was versed in astronomy and below she understood geography, and there was no book on strategy or Dunjia that she did not know. Romance, Ch. 117 §27
While he was in Nanyang, Zhuge Liang heard of her worth and asked for her hand in marriage, and the Romance says that his wife contributed much to Zhuge Liang's learning. After Zhuge Liang died she too soon passed away, and the teaching she left on her deathbed was solely to urge her son Zhuge Zhan on with loyalty and filial piety. Romance, Ch. 117 §27–28
She appears only in Chapter 117, one of the 120 chapters of the Romance, and her name is in no chapter title. She does not appear in Chen Shou's main text; the only record of her is in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biography of Zhuge Liang in Chen Shou's main text does not identify Zhuge Zhan's mother; it records that at first Zhuge Liang had no son and made Zhuge Qiao, the second son of his elder brother Zhuge Jin, his heir, and that in the 12th year of Jianxing (234) Zhuge Liang wrote in a letter to Zhuge Jin that Zhan was now eight years old. In the Romance
In Chapter 117 of the Romance, Deng Ai, having taken the city of Jiangyou, gathers the various units from the Yinping byway and heads straight for Fucheng, where the officials, soldiers and people all surrender. Men of Shu rush the news to Chengdu and urgent memorials fly in from far and near like snowflakes, but when the Later Sovereign holds court to discuss the matter, the many officials only look at one another and say not a word. Then Xi Zheng steps out of the ranks and proposes that the son of Marquis Wu be summoned to discuss a plan for driving back the enemy. Romance, Ch. 117 §25–27
Here the Romance introduces Marquis Wu's son Zhuge Zhan and reveals that his mother, Lady Huang, was none other than the daughter of Huang Chengyan. His mother was very plain in appearance but had extraordinary talent: above she was versed in astronomy and below she understood geography, and there was no book on strategy or Dunjia that she did not know. While in Nanyang, Marquis Wu heard of her worth and asked for her hand in marriage. Romance, Ch. 117 §27
The Romance says that his wife contributed much to Marquis Wu's learning, and records that after Marquis Wu died she too soon passed away, and that the teaching she left on her deathbed was solely to urge her son Zhuge Zhan on with loyalty and filial piety. It goes on to say that Zhuge Zhan, bright from childhood, married the Later Sovereign's daughter, became Commandant-Escort and inherited his father's rank of Marquis of Wuxiang, but that when Huang Hao came to wield power he stayed away, pleading illness. Romance, Ch. 117 §28
Following Xi Zheng's advice, the Later Sovereign issues three edicts in succession to summon Zhuge Zhan, and Zhuge Zhan, receiving 70,000 officers and men of Chengdu, makes his eldest son Zhuge Shang the vanguard and sets out to meet the Wei army. In the Romance, Lady Huang's name appears only in this passage introducing Zhuge Zhan. Romance, Ch. 117 §28–30
