Profile
Yang Ling is a Colonel in Command of Troops under Han Xuan, Administrator of Changsha, who appears in Chapter 53 of the Romance. When Han Xuan, hearing that Guan Yu's army is coming, summons the veteran general Huang Zhong to confer, Yang Ling steps forward and says that there is no need for the old general to go out and fight, for he will surely capture Guan Yu with his own hands. Han Xuan, greatly pleased, gives him 1,000 troops and sends him out of the city; some fifty li out, Yang Ling meets Guan Yu's forces and challenges them to battle, but before three bouts are over he is cut down from his horse by Guan Yu's blade. Romance, Ch. 53 §9–10
Of the Romance's 120 chapters he appears only in Chapter 53, and no chapter has his name in its title. Guan Yu, who cut him down, pursues the routed troops right up to the city walls and clashes with Huang Zhong. In the Romance
In Chapter 53 of the Romance, when Liu Bei, having reached Wuling, informs Guan Yu by letter that Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun have each taken a commandery, Guan Yu asks to be put in charge of Changsha, which has not yet been taken. Zhuge Liang warns him that Han Xuan, Administrator of Changsha, has a great general, Huang Zhong, who though nearly sixty has the courage to withstand ten thousand men and must not be taken lightly, but Guan Yu sets off with only the 500 blade-bearing soldiers of his own command. On Zhuge Liang's advice, Liu Bei follows with an army toward Changsha. Romance, Ch. 53 §5–8
Han Xuan, who has always been hot-tempered and quick to kill and is hated by everyone, hears that Guan Yu's army is coming and summons Huang Zhong to confer, and Huang Zhong says that with this blade and this bow of his, if a thousand come, a thousand will die. Before he has finished speaking, Yang Ling, a Colonel in Command of Troops, steps forward from below the steps and says that there is no need for the old general to go out and fight, for he will surely capture Guan Yu with his own hands. Han Xuan, greatly pleased, has Yang Ling lead 1,000 troops and rush out of the city. Romance, Ch. 53 §9–10
Some fifty li out, Guan Yu's forces have already arrived, and Yang Ling, levelling his spear, rides out before the lines, hurling insults and challenging them to battle. Guan Yu, enraged, says not another word but charges with his blade whirling, and Yang Ling meets him with his spear levelled, but before three bouts are over he is cut down from his horse by Guan Yu's blade. Guan Yu pursues the routed troops straight to the city walls, and Han Xuan, greatly alarmed, sends out Huang Zhong. Huang Zhong and Guan Yu fight more than a hundred bouts without either gaining the upper hand. Yang Ling's name does not appear again in the Romance after this. Romance, Ch. 53 §10–12
