Profile
The daughter of Cao Ren is a figure who appears in Chapter 29 of the Romance; her name is not recorded. When Sun Ce took Lujiang, received the surrender of Hua Xin, Administrator of Yuzhang, and his might spread far, Cao Cao, knowing how strong Sun Ce had become, sighed that it would be hard to contend with the lion cub, and arranged for Cao Ren's daughter to marry Sun Kuang, Sun Ce's youngest brother, so that the two houses were joined by marriage. Romance, Ch. 29 §1
She appeared only in Chapter 29, a single chapter out of the Romance's 120, and in that one sentence alone, and her name appeared in no chapter title. Chen Shou's main text records this marriage in the Biography of Sun Ce, explaining that because Yuan Shao was then at the height of his power, Lord Cao could not yet bring his strength to bear on Sun Ce as he wished and meant to placate him for the time being; it also says that the woman married to Sun Kuang was not Cao Ren's daughter but the daughter of Lord Cao's younger brother. The passage on Sun Kuang in the Biographies of the Imperial Clan records that Sun Kuang's son Sun Tai was a maternal grandson of the Cao family. Chen Shou's main text does not record her name. In the Romance
Chapter 29 of the Romance opens by saying that after Sun Ce had made himself master of Jiangdong, his troops were picked and his provisions plentiful. In the 4th year of Jian'an (199) Sun Ce took Lujiang by surprise and defeated Liu Xun, and by having Yu Fan rush a proclamation to Yuzhang he received the surrender of Hua Xin, Administrator of Yuzhang. As his fame and momentum spread greatly from then on, Sun Ce sent Zhang Hong to Xuchang to submit a memorial and present news of his victories. Romance, Ch. 29 §1
Cao Cao, knowing how strong Sun Ce had become, sighed, 'It will be hard to contend with the lion cub!' He then at last arranged for Cao Ren's daughter to marry Sun Kuang, Sun Ce's youngest brother, and the two houses were joined by marriage. This single sentence is the only place where the Romance mentions the daughter of Cao Ren, and it records nothing of what happened to her afterward. Romance, Ch. 29 §1
Cao Cao then kept Zhang Hong at Xuchang and refused Sun Ce the post of Grand Marshal he had sought. Resenting this, Sun Ce constantly harbored the intention of raiding Xudu. Romance, Ch. 29 §2
