Profile
Yuan Feng was the father of Yuan Shu and served as Minister of Works. He has no biography of his own in the Records, and his name appears once, as 'son of the Minister of Works Yuan Feng', at the opening of the account of Yuan Shu in the Biographies of Dong Zhuo, the Two Yuans and Liu Biao in Records of Wei 6. Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name, deeds or death. Records, Wei 6 §72
In the Romance only his name appears, in Chapter 2, in the passage introducing Yuan Shao, in the words 'son of the Minister over the Masses Yuan Feng and nephew of Yuan Wei'. He appears only in this one of the 120 chapters, and no chapter has his name in its title. Romance, Ch. 2 §41
In the Records
Yuan Shu, courtesy name Gonglu, was the son of the Minister of Works Yuan Feng and a younger cousin of Yuan Shao. Yuan Shu was known for his chivalrous spirit; recommended as Filial and Incorrupt, he became a Gentleman of the Palace, and after serving in a range of posts both at court and in the provinces he became Colonel Who Breaks Assaults and General of the Household Rapid as Tigers. Records, Wei 6 §72
Yuan Shao was a man of Ruyang in Runan; his great-great-grandfather Yuan An had been Minister over the Masses of Han, and since from Yuan An onward the family had held the office of the Three Excellencies for four generations, its power could sway the realm. When Dong Zhuo intended to depose the emperor, Yuan Shao's uncle Yuan Wei was Grand Tutor, and later Dong Zhuo executed Yuan Shao's entire clan, including the Grand Tutor Yuan Wei. In Chen Shou's main text the only place where Yuan Feng's name appears is the opening of the account of Yuan Shu, and it is not recorded whose son Yuan Feng was in this lineage or how he was related to Yuan Wei. In the Romance
In Chapter 2 of the Romance, when Emperor Ling falls gravely ill, the Regular Palace Attendant Jian Shuo memorializes that if Prince Xie is to be set up, He Jin must first be killed to cut off future trouble. Warned at the palace gate by the Major Pan Yin, He Jin hurries home and gathers the high ministers, intending to kill all the eunuchs. When Pan Yin comes to report that the emperor has already died and that Jian Shuo and the Ten Regular Attendants, keeping the death secret, mean to lure He Jin in with a forged edict, He Jin asks who dares to join him in setting the rightful ruler on the throne and attacking the traitors. Romance, Ch. 2 §38–40
At this, a man steps forward and says that if he is lent 5,000 picked troops he will break through the gates, set up the new ruler, kill all the eunuchs and bring peace to the realm; the Romance introduces him as 'son of the Minister over the Masses Yuan Feng and nephew of Yuan Wei, named Shao, courtesy name Benchu, now Colonel-Director of Retainers'. He Jin, overjoyed, gives him 5,000 of the Imperial Guard, and leading some thirty high ministers goes in and, before Emperor Ling's coffin, has the Crown Prince Bian ascend the imperial throne. This passage is the only place in the Romance where Yuan Feng's name appears. Romance, Ch. 2 §41
