Profile
Zheng Zhong appears in the Records as one of those who produced commentaries and explanations on Zuo's Spring and Autumn Annals. He has no biography of his own, and in Chen Shou's main text his name appears once, in the account of Yin Mo in the Biographies of Du, Zhou, Du, Xu, Meng, Lai, Yin, Li, Qiao and Xi, Records of Shu 12. It is the passage saying that the Shu scholar Yin Mo devoted himself to Zuo's Spring and Autumn Annals and could recite and expound nearly all the commentaries and explanations, from Liu Xin's Tiaoli to those of Zheng Zhong, Jia Kui and his father, Chen Yuan and Fu Qian. Records, Shu 12 §43
Chen Shou's main text does not record Zheng Zhong's courtesy name, origins, life or death, and the Records contain no assessment of him. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Shu 12 §43
In the Records
Yin Mo was a man of Fu County in Zitong Commandery. In the region of Yi Province most people prized the new-text learning and did not esteem the study of chapter and verse, but Yin Mo knew that this was not broad enough, so he traveled far to study in Jing Province and received the old-text learning from Sima Decao (Sima Hui), Song Zhong (Song Zhongzi) and others. Records, Shu 12 §43
Yin Mo was versed in all the classics and histories, and he also devoted himself to Zuo's Spring and Autumn Annals, in which he became expert. Chen Shou wrote that, from Liu Xin's Tiaoli to the commentaries and explanations of Zheng Zhong, Jia Kui and his father, Chen Yuan and Fu Qian, he could recite and expound nearly all of them, so that he no longer had to open the books. Records, Shu 12 §43
Later, when the First Sovereign (Liu Bei) established the crown prince, Yin Mo became Supervisor of the Crown Prince's Household and taught the Zuo Commentary to the Later Sovereign (Liu Shan). In Chen Shou's main text this one passage in the account of Yin Mo is the only place where Zheng Zhong appears, and his courtesy name, origins, deeds and death are not recorded. Records, Shu 12 §43–44
