Profile

Xiahou Ru was a Protector of the Army of Wei. The Records give him no biography of his own; in Chen Shou's main text he appears in three passages of the account of Zhang Ji in Records of Wei 15, the Biographies of Liu, Sima, Liang, Zhang, Wen and Jia. In the time of Emperor Wen, when the Lushui Hu of Liang Province rebelled, he was sent with the general Fei Yao and others to follow Zhang Ji, who had become Inspector of Liang Province, and later, together with Zhang Ji, he defeated Su Heng of Jiuquan, the Qiang chief Lindai and others and made them surrender. Records, Wei 15 §48–50 · 53

Zhang Ji submitted a memorial asking to rebuild Zuocheng and build forts together with Xiahou Ru to guard against the tribesmen. Chen Shou's main text does not record Xiahou Ru's courtesy name, origins, later career or death, and the assessment in Records of Wei 15 does not take him up either. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wei 15 §53 · 89

In the Records

According to the account of Zhang Ji in Records of Wei 15, when the Lushui Hu of Liang Province, Yijian Jiqie, Zhiyuanduo and others, rebelled and the region west of the Yellow River fell into great turmoil, the emperor (Emperor Wen), saying that no one but Zhang Ji could bring peace to Liang Province, recalled Zou Qi, Inspector of Liang Province, and had Zhang Ji replace him. He then sent the Protector of the Army Xiahou Ru, the general Fei Yao and others to follow after Zhang Ji. Records, Wei 15 §47–49

Overruling the generals who said that their troops were few and the roads dangerous, Zhang Ji crossed the Yellow River at Jincheng, spread word that he was going by way of Zhanyin, and secretly passed through Juci and came out at Wuwei. Only after Zhang Ji had occupied Wuwei did Fei Yao arrive, and Xiahou Ru and the others had still not arrived. Zhang Ji went straight on to Xianmei and crushed the tribesmen with an ambush, beheading and capturing them by the tens of thousands. Records, Wei 15 §49–51

Later, when Su Heng of Jiuquan rebelled and attacked the border counties together with the Qiang chief Lindai and more than ten thousand Dingling Hu cavalry, Zhang Ji and Xiahou Ru defeated them, and Su Heng, Lindai and the others all surrendered. Zhang Ji then submitted a memorial asking to rebuild Zuocheng together with Xiahou Ru, building forts and ramparts and setting up beacon towers and storehouses to guard against the tribesmen. The Western Qiang, alarmed, surrendered, bringing more than twenty thousand encampments. Records, Wei 15 §53

Zhang Ji died in the 4th year of Huangchu (223). In Chen Shou's main text Xiahou Ru's name appears only in this account of Zhang Ji, and his courtesy name, origins, later career and death are not recorded. The assessment in Records of Wei 15 discusses together the Inspectors since the end of the Han and does not take up Xiahou Ru. Records, Wei 15 §55 · 49–50 · 53 · 89
