Profile
Wuyangjun appears in Chapter 2 of the Romance as the mother of He Miao, He Jin's younger brother. After He Jin had Empress Dong moved to Hejian and Dong Chong, General of Agile Cavalry, cut his own throat, bringing down Empress Dong's faction, Zhang Rang and Duan Gui won over He Miao and his mother Wuyangjun with gold, silver, jewels and rare treasures and had them go in to Empress He day and night to shield them with kind words, and so the Ten Regular Attendants regained favor. Romance, Ch. 2 §48–49
She appears only in Chapter 2, 1 of the Romance's 120 chapters; her name is in no chapter title, and there is no scene in which she speaks or acts herself. She does not appear in Chen Shou's main text and is recorded only in Pei Songzhi's annotations. Chen Shou's main text, in Dong Zhuo's own biography, records that he was cruel and inhumane by nature, intimidated people with harsh punishments, and avenged even the slightest grudge, so that no one could feel safe. Romance, Ch. 2 §49Records, Wei 6 §9
In the Romance
In Chapter 2 of the Romance, Empress He, seeing Empress Dong monopolize power, rebuked her at a banquet and the two palaces quarreled; the next day at court He Jin had the court officials memorialize that Empress Dong, having originally been the consort of a vassal king, could not remain long in the palace and should be moved to Hejian. While sending people to see Empress Dong off, he also deployed the palace guards to surround the residence of Dong Chong, General of Agile Cavalry, and demand his seal and ribbon. Realizing how desperate matters were, Dong Chong cut his own throat in the rear hall. Romance, Ch. 2 §46–49
When Zhang Rang and Duan Gui saw that Empress Dong's faction had fallen, they won over He Jin's younger brother He Miao and his mother Wuyangjun with gold, silver, jewels and rare treasures, and had them go in to Empress He day and night to shield them with kind words. In this way the Ten Regular Attendants regained favor. This single passage is the only place in the Romance where Wuyangjun's name appears. Romance, Ch. 2 §49
In the 6th month, after He Jin had Empress Dong poisoned at the post station in Hejian, Yuan Shao, Colonel-Director of Retainers, urged He Jin to seize the opportunity to kill the eunuchs. Hearing of this, Zhang Rang and the others told He Miao and sent him still more bribes, and He Miao told Empress He that the General-in-Chief's wish to kill the Ten Regular Attendants without cause was the road to disorder. Empress He accepted his words and rejected He Jin's request to kill the eunuchs. Romance, Ch. 2 §50–52
