Profile
Lu Yun was the son of Lu Kang, Grand Marshal of Wu, and the grandson of Lu Xun. He has no biography of his own in the Records; in Chen Shou's main text his name appears once, in the record of Lu Kang at the end of the biography of Lu Xun. When Lu Kang died in the autumn of the 3rd year of Fenghuang (274), his son Lu Yan (陸晏) succeeded him, and Lu Yan and his younger brothers Lu Jing, Lu Xuan, Lu Ji and Lu Yun divided Lu Kang's troops among them. Records, Wu 13 §83–84 · 88
Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name, his offices, the years of his birth and death, or what he did afterwards. In his assessment in the biography of Lu Xun, Chen Shou assessed only Lu Xun and Lu Kang and said nothing about Lu Yun. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wu 13 §88–89 · 91
In the Records
Lu Yun's grandfather Lu Xun lost his eldest son Lu Yan (陸延) early, so his second son Lu Kang succeeded to the title. Lu Kang was a grandson of Sun Ce through his mother. In the spring of the 2nd year of Fenghuang (273) Lu Kang was appointed Grand Marshal and Governor of Jing Province at his post, and when he fell ill in the summer of the 3rd year (274), worried about the defenses of Xiling and Jianping, he submitted a memorial asking that after his death the western front always be kept in mind. He then died in the autumn of that year. Records, Wu 13 §58 · 60 · 83–84 · 87–88
Lu Kang was succeeded by his son Lu Yan (陸晏), and Lu Yan and his younger brothers Lu Jing, Lu Xuan, Lu Ji and Lu Yun divided Lu Kang's troops among them. This is the only passage in Chen Shou's main text in which Lu Yun's name appears, and no office held by him is recorded. Records, Wu 13 §88
Lu Yan became Assistant General and Supervisor of Yidao, and Lu Jing, having married a princess, was appointed Chief Commandant of Cavalry and enfeoffed as Marquis of Piling, and on taking command of Lu Kang's troops he was appointed Lieutenant General and Area Commander of Zhongxia. In the 4th year of Tianji (280), when the Jin army attacked Wu, the General Who Soars Like a Dragon, Wang Jun, came east down the river taking every place he reached, so that in the end things turned out as Lu Kang had feared. On the renxu day of the 2nd month Lu Yan was killed by a detached force of Wang Jun's, and on the following day, guihai, Lu Jing too was killed, at the age of thirty-one. Chen Shou's main text does not record what became of Lu Yun at this time. Records, Wu 13 §88–89
In his assessment in the biography of Lu Xun, Chen Shou praised Lu Xun's strategy in defeating Liu Bei and his loyalty in caring for the state, and said that Lu Kang was upright, clear-sighted and skilled in planning, having his father's bearing in every respect and carrying on the family enterprise well. There is no assessment of Lu Yun. Records, Wu 13 §91
