Profile

He Zhi was a man of Shu Commandery whom Yang Hong took on as an Assistant Clerk of the Gate Office. Having talent for planning and ability in handling affairs, he was recommended as a commandery clerk and within a few years became Administrator of Guanghan. Yang Hong himself was still in Shu Commandery at the time. Because of this, the people of the western lands all admired Zhuge Liang's ability to make full use of the talents of the men of his time. Records, Shu 13 §46Records, Shu 11 §37

As Administrator of Guanghan he had a reputation for being generous and open-handed. When Zhang Ni, who had never been close to him, fell gravely ill, Zhang Ni had himself carried to him in a carriage and asked him for treatment, and He Zhi spent his own wealth on the treatment, so that Zhang Ni recovered within a few years. Records, Shu 13 §46–47

He has no biography of his own in Chen Shou's main text and appears only in the 'He Zhi' passage appended to the account of Yang Hong in the Biographies of Huo, Wang, Xiang, Zhang, Yang and Fei, Records of Shu 11, and in the biography of Zhang Ni in Records of Shu 13. His courtesy name, later career and death are not recorded, and his name does not appear in the assessments of either volume. He does not appear in the Romance. In the Records

When the First Sovereign was contending for Hanzhong, Fa Zheng, the Administrator of Shu Commandery, went north with the First Sovereign, so Zhuge Liang submitted a memorial to have Yang Hong serve concurrently as Administrator of Shu Commandery, and when every matter was well handled, had him formally appointed. Records, Shu 11 §28–29

He Zhi, whom Yang Hong took on as an Assistant Clerk of the Gate Office, had talent for planning and ability in handling affairs, was recommended as a commandery clerk, and within a few years became Administrator of Guanghan. At that time Yang Hong too was still in Shu Commandery. For this reason the people of the western lands all admired Zhuge Liang's ability to make full use of the talents of the men of his time. Records, Shu 11 §37

In the 5th year of Jianxing (227), when the Chancellor Zhuge Liang went north and was stationed at Hanzhong, bandits of the hills of Mianzhu County in Guanghan Commandery, led by Zhang Mu and others, plundered army supplies, and the Commandant Zhang Ni suppressed and pacified them. Later Zhang Ni fell gravely ill, and his family had always been poor. Records, Shu 13 §45–46

He Zhi of Shu Commandery, the Administrator of Guanghan, was known for being generous and open-handed, and although Zhang Ni had never been close to him, he had himself carried in a carriage to He Zhi and asked him to treat his illness. He Zhi spent his own wealth on the treatment, and Zhang Ni recovered within a few years. Records, Shu 13 §46–47

Chen Shou's main text does not record He Zhi's courtesy name, later career or death. The assessment at the end of volume 11 says only of Yang Hong that he devoted his heart wholly to loyalty and fairness, and the assessment at the end of volume 13 says only of Zhang Ni that his judgment and decisions were clear and resolute; neither deals with He Zhi.
