Profile

Chen Yu was a man of Xiapi. He has no biography of his own in the Records, and in Chen Shou's text he appears once, in the biography of Lü Fan in Records of Wu 11. At that time he styled himself Administrator of Wu Commandery, stayed at Haixi, and was in league with the powerful local strongman Yan Baihu. Records, Wu 11 §35

While personally attacking Yan Baihu, Sun Ce sent Lü Fan and Xu Yi separately to attack Chen Yu at Haixi, and his chief general Chen Mu was beheaded and his head displayed. Chen Shou's text does not record Chen Yu's later deeds or his death, and Chen Shou did not treat him in his assessment for volume 11 either. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wu 11 §35 · 67

In the Records

After following Sun Ce in pacifying Moling and Qu'a, Lü Fan was given additional infantry and cavalry; serving as Magistrate of Wanling, he defeated the bandits of Danyang, and after returning to Wu he was transferred to Commander (dudu). At this time Chen Yu of Xiapi styled himself Administrator of Wu Commandery and stayed at Haixi, in league with the powerful local strongman Yan Baihu. Records, Wu 11 §34–35

Sun Ce personally led an army to suppress Yan Baihu, and separately sent Lü Fan and Xu Yi to attack Chen Yu at Haixi; they beheaded his chief general Chen Mu and displayed the head. Chen Shou's text does not record in which year this fighting took place or what became of Chen Yu afterward. Records, Wu 11 §35

In his assessment for volume 11, Chen Shou discussed Zhu Zhi, Lü Fan, Zhu Ran and Zhu Huan, as well as Lü Ju, Zhu Yi and Shi Ji, but did not treat Chen Yu. Records, Wu 11 §67
