Profile
Zhang Meng was Administrator of Wuwei. The Records give him no biography of his own, and in Chen Shou's main text he appears once, in the account of Pang Yu in the Biographies of Er Li, Zang, Wen, Lü, Xu, Dian, Er Pang and Yan in Records of Wei 18. He is recorded as the man who, as Administrator of Wuwei, rebelled, killed the Inspector Handan Shang and ordered that anyone who went to his mourning would be put to death, yet sent back Pang Yu, who had defied the order, wailed for Handan Shang and then came to kill him, calling him a man of righteousness. Records, Wei 18 §77
Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name, origin, birth and death, or any other deeds. In his assessment in volume 18, Chen Shou said that Pang Yu did not shrink from falling on his sword and that his sincerity moved the neighboring commanderies, but he said nothing separately about Zhang Meng. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wei 18 §77 · 92
In the Records
While serving as Administrator of Wuwei, Zhang Meng rebelled and killed the Inspector Handan Shang, and issued an order: 'Anyone who dares to attend Handan Shang's mourning will be put to death without pardon.' Pang Yu, who was then an Attendant Officer of Liang Province acting as Chief of Poqiang, heard of this, abandoned his office and hurried there day and night, and finished wailing aloud at the place of mourning. Records, Wei 18 §77
After his lamentations, Pang Yu went to Zhang Meng's gate with a dagger hidden on his person, meaning to kill Zhang Meng when he was received. Zhang Meng, knowing him to be a man of righteousness, ordered him sent back and did not kill him. Because of this, Pang Yu became known as a loyal and steadfast man. This passage is the only place in Chen Shou's main text where Zhang Meng appears. Records, Wei 18 §77
