Profile
Chunyu Dao is a subordinate general of Cao Ren who appears in Chapter 41 of the Romance. On the day Cao Cao's troops are pursuing Xuande at Dangyang, he has captured Mi Zhu and tied him onto a horse, and, holding a great blade in his hand and leading more than a thousand troops, he is just about to escort his captive away to present him and claim the credit when he runs into Zhao Yun, who has just found Lady Gan. Romance, Ch. 41 §35–36 · 47
When Zhao Yun gives a great shout and charges at him with his spear leveled, Chunyu Dao cannot hold him off and is speared from his horse by Zhao Yun with a single thrust. Zhao Yun rescues Mi Zhu and seizes two horses. Romance, Ch. 41 §47–48
He appears in only one of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 41, and his name is in no chapter title. Chunyu Dao does not appear in Chen Shou's main text or in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biography of Zhao Yun in Chen Shou's main text records only that when the First Sovereign was pursued by Lord Cao at Changban in Dangyang and fled south abandoning his wife and children, Zhao Yun personally carried his young son (the Later Sovereign) and protected Lady Gan, so that both escaped harm; it does not record Mi Zhu being captured. In the Romance
In Chapter 41 of the Romance, Cao Cao, having taken Jing Province, has 5,000 elite iron-clad cavalry picked from all his units and orders them to catch up with Liu Bei within one day and one night. Xuande advances toward Jiangling leading more than 100,000 common people and some 3,000 troops and horses, with Zhao Yun protecting the family members and Zhang Fei guarding the rear. That night, after they have camped at Mount Jing in Dangyang County, Cao Cao's troops come surging from the northwest around the fourth watch; with Zhang Fei's help Xuande cuts a bloody path and flees east, and when day breaks Mi Zhu, Mi Fang, Jian Yong, Zhao Yun and the others are all nowhere to be found. Romance, Ch. 41 §31–32 · 35–37
Having fought from around the fourth watch until daybreak and lost Xuande and his family, Zhao Yun wanders through the chaos of the troops searching for Lady Gan and Lady Mi and the young lord A Dou, whom his master had entrusted to him. He comes upon Jian Yong lying in the grass, lends him a horse and sends him on ahead; from a soldier lying where an arrow had brought him down, he hears that Lady Gan has gone south with a group of common women, and he follows and finds her. Lady Gan says that she and Lady Mi were pursued and separated, and that she does not know where Lady Mi and A Dou have gone. Romance, Ch. 41 §41–46
Just then the common people cry out and another body of troops bursts out: on a horse in front Mi Zhu is tied up, and behind him a general, holding a great blade in his hand, leads more than a thousand troops. It is Chunyu Dao, a subordinate general of Cao Ren, who has captured Mi Zhu and is just about to escort him away to present him and claim the credit. When Zhao Yun gives a great shout, levels his spear, spurs his horse and charges straight at him, Chunyu Dao cannot hold him off and is speared from his horse by Zhao Yun with a single thrust. Zhao Yun rides forward, rescues Mi Zhu and seizes two horses. Romance, Ch. 41 §47–48
Zhao Yun puts Lady Gan on a horse, cuts open the main road and escorts her straight to Changban Slope. To Zhang Fei, who shouts from the bridge asking why he has betrayed his elder brother, Zhao Yun replies that he only fell behind because he could not find his lord's lady and the young lord; then he has Mi Zhu go on ahead escorting Lady Gan, and with a few horsemen he goes back the way he came to search for Lady Mi and the young lord. Romance, Ch. 41 §48–49
