Profile
Zhong Jin (鍾縉) appears in the Romance as a subordinate general of Xiahou Dun and is the brother of Zhong Shen. In Chapter 41, when Zhao Yun, holding A Dou to his breast, breaks out through the layered encirclement of Cao Cao's troops, the two brothers burst out together with their troops from below a hillside in front of him and shout to him to dismount and submit to being bound. Of the two brothers, Zhong Jin is the one who wields a great axe. Romance, Ch. 41 §62 · 64Romance, Ch. 42 §1
In Chapter 42 he leads the way against Zhao Yun, swinging his great axe, but in fewer than three bouts he is speared off his horse by Zhao Yun. Zhong Shen, pursuing Zhao Yun, is also cut down and killed by Zhao Yun's Qinggang Sword. Romance, Ch. 42 §1–2
He appears in 2 of the Romance's 120 chapters (Chapters 41–42), and his name is in no chapter title. Zhong Jin does not appear in Chen Shou's main text or in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The biography of Zhao Yun in Chen Shou's main text records only that when the First Sovereign, pursued by Lord Cao at Changban in Dangyang, abandoned his wife and children and fled south, Zhao Yun himself carried the young son (the Later Sovereign) in his arms and protected Lady Gan, so that all escaped harm. In the Romance
In Chapter 41 of the Romance, when Lady Mi entrusts A Dou to Zhao Yun and throws herself into a dry well, Zhao Yun pushes over an earthen wall to cover the well and mounts his horse with A Dou held to his breast. Pursued by Zhang He, he falls into a pit and escapes from it, and when he is blocked front and rear by four generals who had surrendered from Yuan Shao's service, he draws the Qinggang Sword, cuts about him wildly and breaks through the layered encirclement. Seeing this from the top of Mount Jing, Cao Cao has the order sent everywhere that when Zhao Yun arrives no one is to shoot arrows at him from hiding, but he is only to be taken alive. Romance, Ch. 41 §55–62
Having broken through the encirclement and already left the main battle line, his war robe soaked in blood, Zhao Yun is pressing on when two more bodies of troops burst out from below a hillside: they are the two brothers Zhong Jin and Zhong Shen, subordinate generals of Xiahou Dun. One wields a great axe and the other a painted halberd, and they shout loudly to Zhao Yun to dismount at once and submit to being bound. The Romance closes Chapter 41 with the lines that he has only just escaped the tiger's den when he meets those who come stirring up the waves from the dragon's pool. Romance, Ch. 41 §64–65
In Chapter 42 the two block Zhao Yun's way and fight him. When Zhao Yun levels his spear and thrusts straight at them, Zhong Jin meets him first, swinging his great axe, but in fewer than three bouts he is speared off his horse by Zhao Yun, and Zhao Yun cuts his way through and rides off. Zhong Shen pursues closely with his halberd, but Zhao Yun wheels his horse round, parries the painted halberd with his spear and strikes down with the Qinggang Sword, cutting away half his head together with his helmet; Zhong Shen falls from his horse dead, and the rest of their men scatter and flee. In the Romance, Zhong Jin's name appears only in these two chapters. Romance, Ch. 42 §1–2
