Profile
Lady Zou is the wife of Zhang Ji and the aunt of Zhang Xiu, and appears in Chapter 16 of the Romance. After Zhang Ji's death, when his nephew Zhang Xiu has surrendered to Cao Cao and Cao Cao is staying at Wancheng, she is summoned into the army by Cao Cao, who has acted on the words of Cao Anmin, the son of Cao Cao's elder brother, and she stays with Cao Cao. Romance, Ch. 16 §40 · 43–46
As Cao Cao takes his pleasure with her day after day and gives no thought to going home, Zhang Xiu, learning of it, is enraged; after consulting Jia Xu he makes a surprise attack on Cao Cao's camp, and in this fighting Dian Wei, Cao Anmin and Cao Cao's eldest son Cao Ang are killed. Romance, Ch. 16 §46–47 · 49–54
Of the 120 chapters of the Romance she appears in only one, Chapter 16, and no chapter has her name in its title. The biography of Zhang Xiu in Chen Shou's main text (the Biographies of the Two Gongsuns, Tao and the Four Zhangs, Records of Wei 8) states only that when the Grand Progenitor took Zhang Ji's wife, Zhang Xiu resented it, and that the Grand Progenitor's plan to kill Zhang Xiu leaked out and Zhang Xiu launched a surprise attack on him; the wife's surname appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. In the Romance
In Chapter 16 of the Romance, Zhang Ji, attacking Nanyang from Guanzhong, is struck by a stray arrow and killed, and his nephew Zhang Xiu takes command of his followers, makes Jia Xu his strategist and garrisons Wancheng. When Cao Cao raises an army of one hundred and fifty thousand and reaches the Yu River, Zhang Xiu surrenders on Jia Xu's advice, and Cao Cao enters Wancheng, garrisons it and is entertained at banquets that Zhang Xiu gives every day. Romance, Ch. 16 §40 · 42–43
One day the drunken Cao Cao asks privately whether there are any courtesans in the city, and Cao Anmin, the son of Cao Cao's elder brother, replies that beside the guest lodgings he has seen a woman of great beauty, who is the wife of Zhang Ji, Zhang Xiu's uncle. Cao Cao has Cao Anmin take fifty armoured soldiers and bring her, and when he asks her surname, the woman answers that she is Lady Zou, the wife of Zhang Ji. When Cao Cao says that it was for her sake that he accepted Zhang Xiu's surrender, and that otherwise he would have wiped out the clan, Lady Zou bows and says that she is truly grateful for the kindness of being given her life again. Romance, Ch. 16 §44–45
When Cao Cao proposes that they share a bed that night and that she go back to the capital with him to enjoy wealth and honour, Lady Zou bows in thanks, and that night they sleep together in his tent. When Lady Zou says that if she stays long in the city Zhang Xiu is sure to grow suspicious, and that she fears the gossip of outsiders, Cao Cao moves the next day to stay outside the city, summons Dian Wei to stand guard outside the tent of the central army, and takes his pleasure with Lady Zou day after day, giving no thought to going home. Romance, Ch. 16 §45–46
When a member of Zhang Xiu's household secretly informs him, Zhang Xiu, enraged, says, 'That traitor Cao insults me too far!' He consults Jia Xu, moves his troops close to the central army and has his lieutenant general Hu Cher steal Dian Wei's pair of halberds. That night, while Cao Cao is drinking with Lady Zou in his tent, Zhang Xiu's troops burst into the camp setting fires; Dian Wei dies holding the camp gate, and Cao Anmin, who follows the fleeing Cao Cao on foot, and Cao Ang, who gives him his own horse, are also killed. The Romance does not say what became of Lady Zou afterwards. Romance, Ch. 16 §47–54
