Profile
The daughter of Cao Bao appears in the Romance as the second wife of Lü Bu. Chapter 16 of the Romance says that Lü Bu had two wives and one concubine: he first took Lady Yan as his principal wife, later took Diaochan as a concubine, and while he was at Xiaopei also took the daughter of Cao Bao as his second wife. This Lady Cao died first and left no children. Romance, Ch. 16 §20
She appears in Chapter 16, one of the 120 chapters of the Romance, and her name is in no chapter title. Earlier, in Chapter 14, her father Cao Bao, about to be flogged by Zhang Fei, begs to be pardoned for the sake of his son-in-law Lü Bu. She appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's notes. Romance, Ch. 16 §20Romance, Ch. 14 §55
In the Romance
In Chapter 14 of the Romance, Zhang Fei, holding Xu Province after seeing Liu Bei off, holds a banquet and presses wine on the officials, and after getting very drunk he has Cao Bao, who refuses the wine two or three times, seized for disobeying a general's order. When Cao Bao pleads, 'Lord Yide, pardon me a little, if only for the sake of my son-in-law,' Zhang Fei asks who his son-in-law is, and when Cao Bao answers that it is Lü Bu, Zhang Fei grows angrier still, saying that he is trying to frighten him by bringing up Lü Bu, and has him given fifty lashes. Romance, Ch. 14 §52–55
Bitterly resentful of Zhang Fei, Cao Bao sends a man through the night with a letter to Lü Bu at Xiaopei, urging him to attack Xu Province while Zhang Fei is drunk. When Lü Bu reaches the city gate in the fourth watch, Cao Bao sees him from the wall and has the gate opened, and Xu Province falls into Lü Bu's hands; Cao Bao, chasing the escaping Zhang Fei, is run through the middle of the back by his spear and dies in the river together with his horse. Romance, Ch. 14 §56 · 58 · 61
In Chapter 16, Yuan Shu, hearing how Lü Bu shot the halberd at the camp gate to reconcile Ji Ling and Liu Bei, flies into a rage and declares that he will attack Liu Bei in person and Lü Bu as well. Ji Ling advises that Lü Bu's wife Lady Yan has a daughter of marriageable age, and that if Yuan Shu asks for her hand for his son, Lü Bu will surely kill Liu Bei; that same day Yuan Shu makes Han Yin the go-between and sends him to Xu Province with gifts. Romance, Ch. 16 §18–19
When Han Yin conveys Yuan Shu's wish to take his daughter as a daughter-in-law, Lü Bu goes in to consult his wife Lady Yan. Here the Romance says that Lü Bu originally had two wives and one concubine: he first took Lady Yan as his principal wife, later took Diaochan as a concubine, and while he was at Xiaopei also took the daughter of Cao Bao as his second wife. Lady Cao died first and left no children, Diaochan too had no children, and only Lady Yan bore a daughter, whom Lü Bu loved most dearly. The Romance does not say when or how Lady Cao died, and does not mention her again after this. Romance, Ch. 16 §20
