Profile
Gou Fu was a general of Shu and a man of Hanchang County in Baxi Commandery, the same commandery as Wang Ping. The Records give him no biography of his own; he appears briefly at the end of the account of Wang Ping in Records of Shu 13, the Biographies of Huang, Li, Lü, Ma, Wang and Zhang. Records, Shu 13 §35 · 42–43
Chen Shou wrote that he was loyal, brave, generous and kind, that he won distinction in battle many times so that his fame and rank were second only to Wang Ping's, and that he rose in office to General of the Left and was enfeoffed as Marquis of Dangqu. The assessment at the end of the volume does not deal with him, and Chen Shou's main text records neither his courtesy name, nor his deeds, nor his death. He does not appear in the Romance. In the Records
Wang Ping, according to his biography, was a man of Dangqu County in Baxi Commandery. In the 12th year of Jianxing (234), when Zhuge Liang died and the army was withdrawing, Wei Yan rose in revolt but was defeated in a single battle, which was Wang Ping's achievement. In the 7th year of Yanxi (244), when General-in-Chief Cao Shuang of Wei headed for Hanchuan with more than 100,000 infantry and cavalry, Wang Ping proposed first sending a Protector of the Army and an Army Adviser to occupy Xingshi while he himself held the rear. Only the Protector of the Army Liu Min agreed with him, and the plan was carried out at once; when the troops from Fu County arrived one after another, the Wei army withdrew, just as Wang Ping had originally planned. Wang Ping died in the 11th year of Yanxi (248). Records, Shu 13 §35 · 38–41
Chen Shou then wrote that, earlier, Gou Fu, a man of Hanchang County in the same commandery as Wang Ping, had been loyal, brave, generous and kind, and that he won distinction in battle many times so that his fame and rank were second only to Wang Ping's. Gou Fu rose in office to General of the Left and was enfeoffed as Marquis of Dangqu. Records, Shu 13 §43
This single line is the only place in Chen Shou's main text where Gou Fu appears. His courtesy name, the nature of his feats in battle, his official career and his death are not recorded. In the assessment at the end of the volume Chen Shou called Wang Ping loyal, brave, stern and upright, but did not deal with Gou Fu. Records, Shu 13 §42–43 · 65
