Profile
Wu Fu, courtesy name Deyu, appears in Chapter 4 of the Romance as the Colonel of the Yue Cavalry who tries and fails to stab Dong Zhuo to death and is killed. When Dong Zhuo kills the Young Emperor and commits atrocity after atrocity, Wu Fu always wears a small coat of armour under his court robes and hides a short knife, waiting for his chance, and he stabs at Dong Zhuo as he enters the court, but is seized by the powerful Dong Zhuo and then thrown down by Lü Bu, who comes in at once. Romance, Ch. 4 §17–19
When Dong Zhuo asks who put him up to rebellion, Wu Fu rebukes him: 'You are not my lord and I am not your subject, so what rebellion is there?' Dragged out on Dong Zhuo's orders and cut to pieces, he does not stop cursing even as he dies. Romance, Ch. 4 §19–20
He appears in only one of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 4, and no chapter has his name in its title. Earlier in the same chapter a different man appears, the Colonel Wu Qiong, who advises Dong Zhuo to make Yuan Shao the Administrator of a commandery. Wu Fu does not appear in Chen Shou's main text and is recorded only in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Romance, Ch. 4 §2–3 · 19
In the Romance
In Chapter 4 of the Romance, on the first day of the 9th month Dong Zhuo assembles all the civil and military officials in the Jiade Hall and, with his sword drawn, declares that the Son of Heaven is benighted and weak, and has Li Ru read out the edict deposing the emperor. Later, claiming that the deposed emperor has written a resentful poem, he has Li Ru lead ten armed men into the palace to murder him; Li Ru throws Empress He down from the tower, has the men strangle Concubine Tang, and kills the Young Emperor by forcing poisoned wine on him. Romance, Ch. 4 §4 · 14 · 17
Thereafter Dong Zhuo goes into the palace every night, violates the palace women and sleeps on the dragon bed. Once he leads his troops to the district of Yangcheng, surrounds the villagers gathered for the 2nd-month sacrifice to the god of the soil, kills them all and carries off their women and goods. Returning to the capital with more than a thousand heads hung beneath his carts, he boasts that he has won a great victory by killing bandits. Romance, Ch. 4 §18
Wu Fu, Colonel of the Yue Cavalry, courtesy name Deyu, seeing Dong Zhuo's cruelty, cannot contain his anger and always wears a small coat of armour under his court robes and hides a short knife, seeking a chance to kill Dong Zhuo. One day, when Dong Zhuo comes to court, Wu Fu meets him below the gallery, draws his knife and stabs straight at him, but the powerful Dong Zhuo seizes him with both hands and Lü Bu comes in at once and throws Wu Fu down. Romance, Ch. 4 §19
When Dong Zhuo asks who put him up to rebellion, Wu Fu glares and shouts: 'You are not my lord and I am not your subject, so what rebellion is there? Your crimes fill the heavens, and every man wishes to kill you! My only regret is that I cannot tear you apart with chariots to make amends to the realm!' Enraged, Dong Zhuo has him dragged out and cut to pieces, and Wu Fu does not stop cursing until he dies. Romance, Ch. 4 §19–20
The Romance honours him with a poem by a later writer that begins, 'Of loyal ministers at the end of Han, speak of Wu Fu; his heaven-piercing valour has no equal in the world.' It then records that from this time on Dong Zhuo always had armoured soldiers escort him whenever he went in or out. Romance, Ch. 4 §21–22
