Profile
Zhuge Jing was a grandson of Zhuge Liang, Chancellor of Shu, and the second son of Zhuge Zhan. He has no biography of his own in the Records; a single line about him appears at the end of the passage on Zhuge Zhan in the Biography of Zhuge Liang (Records of Shu 5). When Deng Ai of Wei attacked Shu in the winter of the 6th year of Jingyao (263), his father Zhuge Zhan and his elder brother Zhuge Shang died fighting at Mianzhu, and Zhuge Jing, together with Zhuge Pan's son Zhuge Xian and others, was moved to Hedong in the interior in the 1st year of Xianxi (264). Records, Shu 5 §43 · 60–61
Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name, his later career or his death, and the assessment in Records of Shu 5 judges only Zhuge Liang and does not deal with him. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Shu 5 §61 · 66–67
In the Records
After Zhuge Liang died, his son Zhuge Zhan inherited his rank. At seventeen Zhuge Zhan married a princess and became Commandant of Cavalry, and after several promotions he became Colonel of Archers Who Shoot at a Sound, Palace Attendant and Deputy Director of the Imperial Secretariat, with the additional title of General Military Adviser. In the 4th year of Jingyao (261) he became acting Protector-General and General of the Guards, handling the affairs of the Imperial Secretariat together with Dong Jue, General-in-Chief Who Supports the State. Records, Shu 5 §43 · 59–60
In the winter of the 6th year of Jingyao (263), when Deng Ai, General Who Conquers the West of Wei, came in by a byroad from Yinping along the Jinggu road, Zhuge Zhan led the various armies to Fu County and halted there, then withdrew to Mianzhu when his vanguard was broken. When Deng Ai tried to entice him with a letter promising to memorialize for him to be made Prince of Langye if he surrendered, Zhuge Zhan angrily beheaded Deng Ai's envoy and at last gave battle, but he was badly defeated and died on the battlefield at the age of thirty-seven. Zhuge Zhan's eldest son Zhuge Shang died with him. Records, Shu 5 §60–61
His second son Zhuge Jing and Zhuge Pan's son Zhuge Xian, among others, were moved to Hedong in the interior in the 1st year of Xianxi (264). Zhuge Pan was the son of Zhuge Qiao, the second son of Zhuge Jin who had become Zhuge Liang's heir; when Zhuge Ke was executed in Wu and all his descendants were wiped out, Zhuge Pan, since Zhuge Liang had descendants of his own, went back to become Zhuge Jin's heir again. Records, Shu 5 §61 · 56–57
This single line is the only place where Zhuge Jing appears in Chen Shou's main text. His courtesy name, his offices, his career after being moved to Hedong and his death are not recorded there, and the assessment in Records of Shu 5 does not deal with him either. Records, Shu 5 §61 · 66–67
