Profile
Xu Ling was a man of Taimo. He has no biography of his own in the Records, and in Chen Shou's main text he appears once, in the account of Yu Fan in the Biographies of Yu, Lu, Zhang, Luo, Lu, Wu and Zhu in Records of Wu 12. He is named together with Ding Lan of Shanyin as one of the two men whom Yu Fan befriended and got on well with as soon as he saw them, and who both in the end became renowned. Records, Wu 12 §14
Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name, his offices or his death. In his assessment for Book 12, Chen Shou discussed only Yu Fan and did not treat Xu Ling. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wu 12 §14 · 89
In the Records
Yu Fan repeatedly remonstrated with Sun Quan, offending him to his face, and several times erred through drink, until Sun Quan's accumulated anger led him to exile Yu Fan to Jiao Province. Although he had been banished for an offense, Yu Fan never tired of lecturing and teaching, and he always had several hundred disciples. Records, Wu 12 §7 · 13
Chen Shou then wrote as follows, beginning with 'Earlier': Ding Lan of Shanyin and Xu Ling of Taimo, one of whom was among the county clerks and the other a man no one knew, were befriended by Yu Fan as soon as he saw them, and in the end both became renowned. Chen Shou's main text does not specify which of the two was the county clerk. Records, Wu 12 §14
This one line is the only place in Chen Shou's main text where Xu Ling appears. His courtesy name, his offices, how he became renowned and his death are not recorded. In his assessment for Book 12, Chen Shou said that Yu Fan was like the wildly upright men of old and so could hardly escape disaster in a degenerate age, but Xu Ling is not included in the assessment.
