Profile

Pang Degong is a man of Xiangyang whose name appears in Chapter 35 of the Romance as a friend of Sima Hui, Master Water Mirror. When Liu Bei, having leapt his horse across the stream and heading toward Nanzhang, asks a herd boy whom his master counts as friends, the boy answers that he is a friend of Pang Degong and Pang Tong of Xiangyang. The boy says that Pang Degong and Pang Tong are uncle and nephew, and that Pang Degong, courtesy name Shanmin, is ten years older than his master. Romance, Ch. 35 §5–7

Of the Romance's 120 chapters he appears only in one, Chapter 35, and no chapter has his name in its title. The Romance mentions him only in the herd boy's words, and there is no scene in which he himself appears. He does not appear in Chen Shou's main text and is recorded only in Pei Songzhi's notes. The Biography of Pang Tong in Chen Shou's main text records only that Pang Tong, a man of Xiangyang, went at about the age of twenty to see Sima Hui of Yingchuan, who had a discerning eye for people, that they talked from day until night, and that Sima Hui declared he would become the foremost of the scholars of the southern provinces; it does not mention Pang Degong. In the Romance

In Chapter 35 of the Romance, while Cai Mao is pursuing him with troops, Liu Bei, having leapt his horse across the stream, rides along a winding path toward Nanzhang and meets a herd boy who comes along astride an ox, playing a short flute. The boy recognizes Liu Bei and says that he attends on his master, and that on days when guests come his master has many times spoken of a hero of the age called Liu Xuande. Romance, Ch. 35 §1 · 5–6

When Liu Bei asks who his master is, the boy answers that his master's compound surname is Sima, his given name Hui and his courtesy name Decao, that he is a man of Yingchuan, and that his Daoist name is Master Water Mirror. Asked whom his master counts as friends, he says that his master is a friend of Pang Degong and Pang Tong of Xiangyang, and asked how Pang Degong is related to Pang Tong, he answers that they are uncle and nephew. The boy says that Pang Degong, courtesy name Shanmin, is ten years older than his master, and that Pang Tong, courtesy name Shiyuan, is five years younger than his master. Romance, Ch. 35 §6–7

The boy goes on to say that one day, while his master was picking mulberry leaves up in a tree, Pang Tong came to visit, sat under the tree and discussed matters with him all day, and that his master is so fond of Pang Tong that he calls him his younger brother. Liu Bei follows the boy to the manor and meets Sima Hui, who tells him that if he obtains even one of two men, the Sleeping Dragon and the Fledgling Phoenix, he can bring peace to the realm. In the Romance Pang Degong's name appears only in the herd boy's words and does not appear again. Romance, Ch. 35 §8–9 · 14
