Profile
He Jiao was Prefect of the Palace Secretariat of the Jin dynasty and held the rank of Marquis Within the Passes. In Chen Shou's main text of the Records his name appears once, in Chen Shou's memorial included in the Biography of Zhuge Liang, Records of Shu 5. Records, Shu 5 §45
In this memorial Chen Shou wrote that, when he was Gentleman of Writing, the Director of the Palace Secretariat Xun Xu and the Prefect of the Palace Secretariat He Jiao had memorialized the throne to have him put in order the old records of Zhuge Liang, the former Chancellor of Shu. Chen Shou compiled those records into twenty-four chapters and presented them in the 2nd month of the 10th year of Taishi (274). He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Shu 5 §44–45 · 54
In the Records
In the memorial attached after the table of contents of the twenty-four chapters of the Collected Works of Zhuge Liang, Chen Shou reported as follows: earlier, when he was Gentleman of Writing, Xun Xu, Palace Attendant, Director of the Palace Secretariat and Marquis of Jibei, and He Jiao, Prefect of the Palace Secretariat and Marquis Within the Passes, had memorialized the throne to have him put in order the old records of Zhuge Liang, the former Chancellor of Shu. Records, Shu 5 §44–45
Chen Shou said that although Zhuge Liang had assisted an imperiled state and, relying on its rugged terrain, refused to submit, his words had nonetheless been preserved and recorded, out of shame that anything good should be lost, and that this was truly the bright and supreme virtue of the Great Jin. He went on to say that he had cut out repetitions and gathered the material by category into twenty-four chapters in all. The table of contents records that these twenty-four chapters total 104,112 characters. Records, Shu 5 §44–45
The memorial ends with the words that the copy had been respectfully written out and submitted to the Bureau of Writing, and at the end is written, 'Presented by your servant Chen Shou, Chancellor of the Marquisate of Pingyang, on the guisi day, the 1st day of the 2nd month of the 10th year of Taishi.' Beyond this, Chen Shou's main text does not record He Jiao's courtesy name, origin or life. Records, Shu 5 §54 · 45
