Profile

Zhang Yun was the father of Zhang Wen, Grand Tutor to the Crown Prince in Wu. He has no biography of his own in the Records and appears twice in the account of Zhang Wen in the Biographies of Yu, Lu, Zhang, Luo, Lu, Wu and Zhu in Records of Wu 12. Making light of wealth and valuing men of learning, he became renowned in the province and commandery, and he died after becoming Sun Quan's Officer of the Eastern Bureau. Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name or the year of his death. Records, Wu 12 §24–25

Later, when Sun Quan heard from the Minister of Ceremonies Gu Yong that at present Zhang Wen had no equal, he said, 'In that case, Zhang Yun has not died.' In his assessment of Records of Wu 12, Chen Shou discussed Zhang Wen but did not deal with Zhang Yun. He does not appear in the Romance. The Zhang Yun who, in Chen Shou's main text and in the Romance, supports Liu Cong together with Cai Mao was a man on Liu Biao's side, and Chen Shou's main text does not state that he was the same person as Sun Quan's Officer of the Eastern Bureau Zhang Yun. In the Records

Zhang Wen, courtesy name Huishu, was a man of Wu County in Wu Commandery. Chen Shou records that his father Zhang Yun, making light of wealth and valuing men of learning, became renowned in the province and commandery, and died after becoming Sun Quan's Officer of the Eastern Bureau. When Zhang Yun became Officer of the Eastern Bureau and when he died are not recorded. Records, Wu 12 §24

From youth Zhang Wen cultivated integrity and was of outstanding appearance. When Sun Quan heard of him and asked his high ministers whom Zhang Wen could be compared with at present, the Minister of Agriculture Liu Ji said he could be ranked with Quan Cong, but the Minister of Ceremonies Gu Yong said that Liu Ji did not really know the man, and that at present Zhang Wen had no equal. Sun Quan said, 'In that case, Zhang Yun has not died.' Records, Wu 12 §24–25

When Sun Quan summoned and received Zhang Wen, his words and answers were so fine that all the onlookers leaned forward in admiration, and Sun Quan too changed his expression and showed him greater courtesy. When he withdrew, Zhang Zhao took his hand and said, 'This old man entrusts his hopes to you; you should understand this clearly.' Zhang Wen was appointed Consultant and Master of Writing for Selection, and then moved to Grand Tutor to the Crown Prince. These two places are the only ones in Chen Shou's main text where Zhang Yun's name appears, and in his assessment of Records of Wu 12 Chen Shou said only that Zhang Wen's talent and literary grace were outstanding but that he lacked the precaution of protecting himself by wisdom, and did not deal with Zhang Yun.
