Profile
Zhong Shen appears in the Romance as a subordinate general of Xiahou Dun and is the brother of Zhong Jin (鍾縉). In Chapter 41, when Zhao Yun, holding A Dou to his breast, breaks out through the layered encirclement of Cao Cao's troops, the two brothers burst out together with their troops from below a hillside in front of him, wielding a great axe and a painted halberd, and shout to him to dismount and submit to being bound. Romance, Ch. 41 §62 · 64
In Chapter 42, after Zhong Jin is speared off his horse by Zhao Yun, Zhong Shen pursues closely with his painted halberd, but Zhao Yun wheels his horse round, parries the halberd with his spear and strikes down with the Qinggang Sword, cutting away half his head together with his helmet, and he falls from his horse dead. Romance, Ch. 42 §1–2
He appears in 2 of the Romance's 120 chapters (Chapters 41–42), but his name appears in no chapter title. Zhong Shen does not appear in Chen Shou's main text or in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The biography of Zhao Yun in Chen Shou's main text records only that when Liu Bei, pursued by Lord Cao at Changban in Dangyang, abandoned his wife and children and fled south, Zhao Yun carried his young son (the Later Sovereign) in his arms and protected Lady Gan, so that all escaped harm. In the Romance
In Chapter 41 of the Romance, Zhao Yun, galloping through Cao Cao's troops with A Dou held to his breast, is blocked front and rear by four generals who had surrendered from Yuan Shao's service, whereupon he draws the Qinggang Sword, cuts about him wildly and breaks through the layered encirclement. Seeing this from the top of Mount Jing, Cao Cao has the order sent everywhere that when Zhao Yun arrives no one is to shoot arrows at him from hiding, but he is only to be taken alive; in this fight Zhao Yun cuts down two great banners, seizes three lances and kills more than fifty famous generals of Cao Cao's camp. Romance, Ch. 41 §60–62
Having broken through the encirclement and already left the main battle line, his war robe soaked in blood, Zhao Yun is pressing on when two more bodies of troops burst out from below a hillside: they are the two brothers Zhong Jin (鍾縉) and Zhong Shen, subordinate generals of Xiahou Dun. One wields a great axe and the other a painted halberd, and they shout loudly to Zhao Yun to dismount at once and submit to being bound. The Romance closes Chapter 41 with the lines that he has only just escaped the tiger's den when he meets those who come stirring up the waves from the dragon's pool. Romance, Ch. 41 §64–65
In Chapter 42 the two block Zhao Yun's way and fight him; Zhong Jin, who meets him first swinging his great axe, is speared off his horse by Zhao Yun in fewer than three bouts, and Zhao Yun cuts his way through and rides off. Zhong Shen pursues with his halberd, so close that his horse's head touches the tail of Zhao Yun's horse, and the tip of his halberd flickers like a shadow at the middle of Zhao Yun's back. Romance, Ch. 42 §1
When Zhao Yun suddenly wheels his horse round, the two come face to face, almost chest to chest. Zhao Yun parries the painted halberd with the spear in his left hand and, drawing the Qinggang Sword with his right, strikes down, cutting away half his head together with his helmet; Zhong Shen falls from his horse dead, and the rest of his men scatter and flee. Having got away, Zhao Yun gallops toward Changban Bridge, leaves the pursuing troops of Wen Pin to Zhang Fei on the bridge, and after riding more than twenty li further hands A Dou over to Liu Bei. Romance, Ch. 42 §1–4
