Profile
Yan Fei was an Administrator of Jingzhao under Wei. The Records give him no biography of his own; his name appears once, as the Administrator of Jingzhao from Jibei, at the end of the Biographies of Ren, Su, Du, Zheng and Cang in Records of Wei 16, just before the assessment. Chen Shou listed Wu Guan, Administrator of Wei Commandery; Ren Yu, Administrator of Qinghe; Yan Fei, Administrator of Jingzhao; Linghu Shao, Administrator of Hongnong; and Kong Yi, Chancellor of Jinan, covering the period from Taizu to the Xianxi era, and wrote that all of them were good officials of the two-thousand-bushel rank. Records, Wei 16 §96
Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name, dates of birth and death, or any other deeds, and he does not appear in the assessment of Records of Wei 16 either. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wei 16 §96 · 98
In the Records
Records of Wei 16, after recording that when Cang Ci died in office the officials and people grieved as if they had lost a relative, lists, for the period from Taizu to the Xianxi era, Wu Guan of Chen State, Administrator of Wei Commandery; Ren Yu of Le'an, Administrator of Qinghe; Yan Fei of Jibei, Administrator of Jingzhao; Linghu Shao of Taiyuan, Administrator of Hongnong; and Kong Yi of Lu State, Chancellor of Jinan. Chen Shou wrote that some of them took pity on the people in judging lawsuits, some extended kindness and affection with sincerity, some kept themselves pure and incorrupt, and some exposed the wicked and brought hidden crimes to light, and that all of them were good officials of the two-thousand-bushel rank. He did not specify which of the five belonged to which category. Records, Wei 16 §95–96
This single line is the only place Yan Fei appears in Chen Shou's main text. When he became Administrator of Jingzhao, his other offices, his courtesy name and his death are not recorded in Chen Shou's main text. The assessment of Records of Wei 16 calls Ren Jun, Su Ze, Du Ji, Zheng Hun and Cang Ci famous administrators of the Wei era and discusses Du Shu, but does not mention Yan Fei.
