Profile

Zhang Mao was a Retainer of the Heir Apparent of Wei who appears in Chapter 105 of the Romance. The Romance portrays him as a man who, in the 3rd year of Qinglong (235), after Cao Rui, ruler of Wei, launched great palace construction projects and the Minister over the Masses Dong Xun remonstrated and was stripped of office and made a commoner, likewise submitted a memorial earnestly remonstrating and was beheaded on Cao Rui's orders. The Romance gives his courtesy name as Yancai. Romance, Ch. 105 §35 · 37 · 39

Of the 120 chapters of the Romance he appears only in Chapter 105, and no chapter has his name in its title. He does not appear in Chen Shou's main text and is recorded only in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Annals of Emperor Ming in Chen Shou's main text record that at this time the palace at Luoyang was extensively rebuilt, the Zhaoyang and Taiji Halls were erected and the Zongzhang Belvedere was built, so that the people missed the farming season, and that although upright ministers such as Yang Fu and Gaotang Long each remonstrated earnestly many times and the emperor could not accept their advice, he always treated them with tolerance. In the Romance

Chapter 105 of the Romance first says that in the 13th year of Jianxing of Shu-Han, that is, the 3rd year of Qinglong (235) of Cao Rui, ruler of Wei, none of the three states raised troops, and then records that Cao Rui launched great construction works at Xuchang to build palaces, erected the Chaoyang and Taiji Halls at Luoyang, and built the Zongzhang Belvedere. He also erected the Chonghua Hall, the Qingxiao Pavilion, the Phoenix Tower and the Nine Dragons Pool, had the Erudite Ma Jun supervise the works, and conscripted more than 30,000 artisans and more than 300,000 laborers to build day and night, so that the complaints of the people never ceased. Romance, Ch. 105 §35–36

When Cao Rui also began works in the Fanglin Garden and made the high ministers carry earth and plant trees there, the Minister over the Masses Dong Xun submitted a memorial earnestly remonstrating. The memorial said that making the ministers carry wood and shoulder earth destroyed the glory of the state to exalt what was useless, and that he knew he would surely die once these words were spoken. Cao Rui was angry, but saying that Dong Xun had always been loyal and righteous, he first stripped him of office and made him a commoner, and declared that anyone else who spoke recklessly would surely be beheaded. Romance, Ch. 105 §37–39

At that time there was a Retainer of the Heir Apparent, Zhang Mao, whose courtesy name was Yancai. When Zhang Mao too submitted a memorial earnestly remonstrating, Cao Rui had him beheaded. The Romance does not give what was written in Zhang Mao's memorial. That same day Cao Rui summoned Ma Jun, told him that he sought a way to consort with immortals and live long without growing old, and on Ma Jun's advice had the bronze figure and the Dew-Collecting Plate of the Boliang Terrace at Chang'an dismantled and brought back. Romance, Ch. 105 §39–42
